A realative Newbie can come on a board like this ask simple innocent question. The shakedown is a plausible one. So giving the poster the benifit of the doubt, naive though he may be, don't pay one red cent. Go to the tourist police near you complain you are the victim of a shakedown and intimidation. Go to the manager of your building, complain. if nothing is done stop paying rent; look for another place and when you've used up your deposit, move.

And uh, what riger said.

If it is a troll, who cares? This is a situation that can actually arise, might be of help to some poor slob. it only becomes a successful troll when people start flaming and making off the wall comments; only then has the troll has succeeded in disruption.

I agree, and would add that LoS is a place that turns civilised convention on its head. If the public door that caved in when you tried to open it was anywhere in the West, others would be on the defensive, not you.

There is the option of playing hard-ball here: Don't respond to anything and insist on a copy of the report.
Then report the guards for extortion and producing a false police report. -that is something Tourist Police should take an interest in.

I'd change apartment a.s.a.p. in any case.

To fix the focking door should well under 10k baht.

For future reference 40K buys you out of a DUI + any damages and 8000 legal service. Which is actually some shit!
A broken door is small potatoes.
If they're trying to hit you up for 50K it unlikely the police are involved. They aren't that focking mercenary.

No thanks to a few people who have nothing better to do than witch hunt. What I read from these people displays the reason why I have never really used forums, because it can be unpleasant.

I had to give a photocopy of ID when I moved in. That was the ID that I had on me at the time but in hindsight I should have photocopied my passport instead.
I noticed when I arrived at the reception at my apartment that the security man there was talking on his walkie talkie. I think they all speak together, all the security in the area but I don't know that for sure.

PM means a personal message? I haven't looked at how to use that yet. I will now. Why do you think you can help in a PM?

Don't be upset by it. I would guess that about 75% of new posters needing advice are trolls so we have to suspicious of every newcomer.

This is the type of door glass that usually has wire in it in my country. I am amazed that a hotel has standard float glass on whatever it is called which breaks with sharp shards. If a child had run into that door, quite possible, it could have been a bloody mess.

It would seem that some of the people who read this didn't want to hear about what I'm going through and reacted nastily. I do now feel exposed. Maybe they do too. I never realised this before. I'm a person who is "rich" but lacking in knowledge. That makes me an easy target for people who are "poor" and know all the local tricks. Whatever the outcome tomorrow, this will make me reconsider my behaviour here, and even my life here.

I have decided that they must have informed the police. They'd have to do that even to claim off insurance. Maybe they got a report and added a zero to 5000 Baht. I wish I had got a copy at the time, but I was too sleepy to think straight then.
