Actually I prefer the term "Pleasantly anesthetized" instead of intoxicated. 555. But to your point, the idea is to take the edge off and relax however one wants to do it. I have found that the better quality liquor the better it tastes hence the more enjoyable it is and no need to add god awful mixers with sugar to cover it up.

I was not much of a Scotch-Whiskey-Bourbon drinker until I had a few good ones. I actually prefer Tequila. Not your rot gut Jose Cuervo Gold or Hornitos crap but special cask Anejo's from Herradura, Dos Artes, Casa Noble, Los Azuelos, etc. The Agave has a different taste grown in different regions, like the Scotch's from Isly versus Highland. They are now complex because they use seasoned oak barrels to let them age. Mixing any of them or "Shooting" any of them is really a waste.

As they say it is an acquired taste. There are some OUTSTANDING Bourbon's and Whiskeys out there now.
