Fantasy my ass. It’s for real bro!

An alternative is that ENT and I will team up in deep cover as Rastafarian Buddhists. Then “I and I” will proclaim the restaurant owner as the reincarnation of Haille Selassie. Every evening we will stride in “tall and proud like the Lions of Judea” and the smell of the “sacred erb” from our spiffs will drift across the establishment.

It might only take four days before the news gets to Jamaica and the real bruddas start flocking in. The owner will then either be out of business or “be going back to Africa.” Jah rules man!

Da Lawd will guide our footsteps, and clad in de armour of righteous indignation, singing de Psalms of Marley we will overcome that iniquitous den of karioke with luv.

Ghost. Somewhere I read that Thailand has over a hundred different types of ghost. You have to be creative. Spread rumors that some one died there one night. A good haunting with visuals, and the end will be insight. Snakes in the bar at night could also keep them on their toes. Creative is the key.

Don't spook LD out with that stuff man! He believes in ghosts!!!

He's particularly spooked about what he calls a hungry ghost, one with a tiny mouth that can't get enough to eat.

Hell, one of them floating around the neighbourhood could drive him barmy, especially after closing time and the restaurant's got no more food available!

The bloody thing might sneak in through his window and suck him and his missus to bits!!!

    Fek, perish the thought!

    The Thais, obviously.

I have no idea where you live but if it were me here in Bangkok I'd have a word with the local guys who run the numbers game etc and make an offer to have them speak to the restaurant guy about being more reasonable. They effectively run the streets anyway.

Dunno if he'd have much luck there.

A little Thai lady mistook him for a store dummy not long ago while he was out shopping with his missus.

That second Sears Optical commercial reminds me of something that happened to me not long ago in Thailand.
I was in a department store waiting by the side of an aisle while my wife was looking at some dresses, and a short Thai lady came up to me and tugged at the material on my shirt a little. When I looked down, I realized she thought I was a store dummy. About the same time, she realized I was real.
I started laughing as I have a good sense of the absurd. She was too embarrassed to laugh at first but smiled wryly after she saw I was laughing.
You read about these things, but it's more absurd when it happens to you

The local hoods'd just treat him the same, IMO.

I reckon Many's got the crack on this one. His first idea was an absolute bobby dazzler.

Either that or shift to another paddock.

I wouldn't say "stupidity" is a hallmark of Thai culture, but willful ignorance- in a variety of circumstances, for example when facts are unpleasant or dangerous, for the sake of civility or politeness, etc.- might be. There is also a tendency to discourage/general reluctance to engage in critical thinking which I think is encouraged by Buddhism- and sometimes it really is better not to "think too much." (Also, too, the education system here sucks.) These characteristics are hardly unique to the Thais (the Japanese are not usually considered stupid, but the lack of critical thinking there can be surprising), but they are pretty good at not knowing/not thinking, and it can be part of the charm of the place, though maybe not so much when you are living here as opposed to holiday-making.
