Today we celebrate for the 167th time the signing of the Treaty of Waitangi
cheers to all my fellow kiwis who enter today through the Teak Door...This is the founding document of New Zealand as a nation, given legal effect in its incorporation into various statutes, particularly for environmental and resource management. By the Treaty, Māori ceded to the Crown the right to govern, and in return the Crown confirmed and guaranteed the rangatiratanga of tangata whenua.
