I can't stand the things because I don't like sweet bread and I despise currants.

If we're lucky, maybe Reg Dingle will run off a batch for his 'decadent dining' thread. He's good at this kind of thing, by all accounts.

Maybe a blob of icing for extra decadence?

He's more likely to take the rumbaba route to decadence, I'd have thought.

Thnx, BLD. If they taste like pan de sal, then I'll like them, since I like pan de sal (Spanish: bread of salt) occasionally. When I was a kid, we often ate them for breakfast since there was a bakery near our old rented place. My dad used to buy them in the morning and we'd eat them warm (fresh from the oven/ bakery) either with butter, margarine or peanut butter.

I've tasted marmite on bread but I didn't like it. It's salty and smells of yeast. It reminded me of yeast extract that was used in science experiments in uni. However, I did like marmite when it was used as an ingredient in food prep. I saw a YT cooking vid of "marmite chicken". I tried cooking it & it was OK.

Now, back to hot cross buns... I think I'll like it with the currants since I like "raisin bread".

    'Despising' currants seems somewhat excessive.

Why are they raisin your hackles?
