Here's a question PAG (or anyone else living in Thailand).

I often fancy making a shepherd's pie, but where can you get lamb mince? I've never seen it and don't want to start mincing up the meat from a lamb shoulder or leg. I'd love to find a source of cheap lamb or mutton for pies and curries.

This cropped up in another thread that I cannot now find, together with the naming conventions for the variants.
The tip offered by someone else here was to get online and order some Oxo Lamb Stock Cubes to stir in with the minced beef. It gives a lamby sort of result.
I tried it a couple of times and it is okay for me.

I have never seen lamb of any description here in Nongbualamphu. Duck gizzards and pig intestine, no problem. Lamb, nothing.

Inspired by your encouraging words I dragged the gf to Makro this morning and told her to ask the staff for lamb. No, no fresh lamb of any description. We got waved in the general direction of a freezer cabinet. We arrived at the cabinet and first impressions were discouraging.



Cheap chicken uterus, anyone? At least it is 'pure' uterus. The impure uterus maybe elsewhere?

Moving swiftly on, the cabinet had some crocodile. Who eats this stuff? I have never seen it on a menu in Isan.



After that, some snapping turtle, silkworm, grasshopper and dew-picked baby frogs. Reminds me of Claridge's buffet.




A true pilgrim is not easily discouraged. Here it is: lamb! Australian, frozen, boneless lamb shoulder.



Squeezed in between the beef small intestine and the frozen beef mammary.



If I ever miss lamb enough to go for an Australian, frozen, boneless lamb shoulder then I'll know where to come.
I'm sure it will still be here.

The two Macro's I use are on Changwattana Rd. and Rangsit which is just above Future Park going north. Neither has lamb regularly, neither has nice beef regularly, and basically the only meat I can count on is an Ozzie beef for burgers. Damn....

That said, they usually have minced beef which is adequate for cottage pie.

Will take a few pics and post them next time I'm in Macro, probably this Sunday. TBH I've only ever been in the 2 in Pattaya but it seems like all Macro's aren't the same.

^ Macro will mince a lamb shoulder for you.

I get then to cut a shoulder or leg into steack slices around 1" thick.

With the leg, you get around 5 steaks and decent shank.

^ I'll have to look into this, I haven't had a decent shank in a while.

But surely the lamb is all frozen? And they will mince it? What about the bone?

It seems a waste to me to get a leg or shoulder of lamb (for roasting) turned into mince.

But it's gotta be better than having minced beef with Lamb Oxo and calling it a shepherd's pie? Surely life hasn't come to that.

What's next... chicken pie made out of rat with Chicken Bisto?

Well impressed, I stopped smoking years ago but love a coffee... but no chance in Korat.

You metropotan guys have no idea how it is living out in the arse end provinces.

I admire your system... but there's no lamb shoulders for the fukkers to mince here in the first place.

Maybe a lamb Oxo cube is the way to go...
