Allegheny Portage Railroad - Pennsylvania

Shohola Glen
Close enough, RS, it's the world famous Horseshoe Curve, near Altoona, Pa.
The bend is a tight arc of approximately 220 degrees. It comprises two separate curves; on the north side, the radius measures 637 ft (194 m), tightening to 609 ft (186 m) on the south side. The curve was built in response to the difficulty of constructing a railroad through the summit of the Allegheny Mountains.
This photo shows the steep lead-in and departure.
An engineering feat in the mid 1800s. Still operates today.

the Pennsylvania Railroad completed the Horseshoe Curve construction. This engineering feat provided a gradual grade increase of no greater than 1.75 percent which permitted the successful crossing of the Allegenies by trains of that period. The directors of the Pennsylvania Railroad originally intended to construct a single-track road to Pittsburgh, but, during construction it became evident that a second track would be of value and so they ordered construction of a second track in certain sections.

I have to step out just now - Tex, I relinquish my spot to you. You go next....

Anping Artillery Fort , Tainan
The fort was built in 1840 during the First Opium War. It is the only surviving of four fortresses built by the Qing at Anping Port to defend Taiwan from British invasion.
