I think it would have been better if Charifly had set out her stall a little more clearly in the first place. If it is right that the chap is not wholly responsible for his actions because of a disability then most if not all here would have adopted a more sympathetic view.

The first point of contact is of course the Australian consulate who should have already been notified of his arrest and incarceration. They are obliged to make welfare visits and to report findings to nominated next of kin but beyond that they can offer little practical help. They may provide a list of lawyers but make no recommendations as to their worth.

In these situations the folk best able to provide good advice are more often than not the long term journalists based in Bangkok and who certainly know the ropes. I'm sure if you email Andrew Drummond ( google his website ) he may be able to point you in the right direction for a reputable lawyer worth his salt. Jim Pollard, an Australian working as a sub editor at the Nation who also strings for several Aussie publications, is a very helpful guy - he has a facebook account and can be contacted there.

This is the problem, as "thegent", points out....the key is..."if it hasn't gone too far''.... there is probably a ten day window from the initial interview...two week max, depending on the Police work load...

you really need to get on to this....any sum you can satisify the jewler with, will be cheap....he's the guy that has to drop the charge....and say it a misunderstanding....your up against it with CCTV...the jewler has involved the police, so it not going to be easy going....but until it is lodged with the court, the complaint is his...

in civil cases...where you just slap someone about, it's by private treaty...

your situation may be what these people deem to be criminal....that means there are more with their hand out....Pattya is imfamious for extortion....

if you get to the jewler in time...don't go dolled up or pumped up, he will only be encouraged to extort more....don't giive the jewler any money, until he squashes the charge with the Police in your presence...you'll need an interperter...make a big thing of the mental health issue...

i've had a trip in a instution here in Thailand...bets a Thai jail, any day...
if you have to go the distance look in to it as an option....

sorry to say this...but this is something you will have to take in hand...get your ticket and get over here...but before hand see if you can get a sense of the penality....the bloody ring, can't be worth that much....certainly in Pattya...
