Death in murder-rape case upheld
The Supreme Court on Tuesday upheld the lower courts' death sentence on a motorcycle taxi driver who murdered and raped a schoolgirl in 2006.
Sirimongkol Ruannak, 38, a motorcycle taxi driver, on the night of June 15, 2006 stabbed a 16-year-old Mathayom 4 student six times with a knife, killing her, before raping the body and stealing 500 baht from her.
The crime took place behind Rim Suan-Fa Sai housing estate on Songprapha road in Sikan area of Don Muang district.
The Criminal and Appeals courts sentenced Sirimongkol, alias Tao, to death and a 50 baht fine. The courts also ordered him to pay 600,000 baht plus 7.5 per cent interest to the relatives of the victim.
The defendant asked the Supreme Court to commute the death penalty.
The Supreme Court today upheld the lower courts' sentence, saying there were no reasons to reduce the penalty.
