Phuket - Farang kickboxing student loses foot in motorbike crash

Phuket kickboxing student loses foot in motorbike crash

PHUKET: An Australian man studying Thai kickboxing in Phuket lost his foot when the motorbike he was riding collided with a pickup truck in Chalong last night.

Staff at the Phuket Provincial Administration Organization’s Tourist Rescue Center named the victim as 30-year-old Mark Anthony Schreiber.

At about 9pm, Mr Schreiber’s motorbike collided with a Toyota Fortuner at the entrance to Soi Thanuthep, off Chao Fa West Road, rescue officers said.

Completely sheared off, Mr Schreiber’s foot became stuck in the bumper of the much larger vehicle.

Chalong Police have thus far not revealed who was at fault or what charges will be filed in the case.

The driver of the Fortuner did not flee the scene, as is common in Thailand in collisions involving motorbikes and trucks.

Mr Schreiber is being treated at Bangkok Hospital Phuket, a private facility in Phuket Town.

It is not known if doctors there will attempt to reattach the foot.

    Update:

As of late this afternoon the Gazette was told that Mr Schrieber’s leg was amputated below the left knee.

His parents are expected to arrive in Phuket this evening.

What a nightmare- no surprise they couldn't re-attach the foot in such traumatic circumstances.

A below-the-knee amputation is way better than above-the-knee, but it's going to be life-altering nonetheless.

I've got two friends who suffered the same injury (on motorcycles) in the last five years- they both came back strong, but it was a long road.
There he goes. One of God's own prototypes. A high-powered mutant of some kind never even considered for mass production. Too weird to live, and too rare to die.

What an awful way to come out of an accident. But still he is alive and that what matters.

Anyone watched Social's vid of him blasting around on his moped in Patt.? It is bloody deadly on the roads on that Island. Never went a day without seeing death or mutilation. In a little restaurant near the fight camps watched a couple of young fight camp farang hire their first motor bike. Just give the owner the money off you go. One was complaining that it would not turn when he wanted to corner.

Had to explain that you had to lean a little. Thought I was pulling his leg. Made it 200m drove into the ditch and broke his arm.

I wouldn't wish this type of injury on anybody and not apportioning blame without knowing the facts , but why do some farangs think they can ride a bike in Thailand when they can't ride one at home ? A mate turned up in Lamai on an R1 (!) he'd hired and it was a complete bag 'o nails - twisted forks , bald seriously under-inflated front tyre , low brake fluid . Complete death-trap and he don't even ride a moped at home , so I persuaded him to return it before he became another statistic .
