Siam Paragon : Absolut Ice Bar

Pernod Ricard to Open Absolut Ice Bar
    06.11.2010

The highlight will be the Absolut Iceberg ice bar, where customers can spend 10 minutes experiencing temperatures of -10 Celsius.
(File Photo, Ice bar in Pattaya).

Pernod Ricard (Thailand) Co, the importer of Absolut Vodka from Sweden, will spend 400 million baht on advertising and promotion in the next five years to make the product the market leader.

Charaspan Srisawadi, the company's marketing manager for wine and white spirits, said younger Thais had shifted to drinking more vodka, leading the vodka market to grow by 20% the past few years, higher than the rate for whisky.

"Most vodka drinkers are in Bangkok and major tourist destinations like Phuket and Samui," she said.

Last year, Thais bought between 120,000 and 130,000 cases of vodka and this is expected to rise to 150,000 cases this year and 170,000 next year.

Absolut ranks second in the local vodka market with a 35% share, trailing Smirnoff. The brand does well in supermarket and hypermarket channels.

Ms Charaspan said Thailand was among the fastest-growing markets for Absolut after China and India. During the first nine months of this year, local sales of Absolut jumped by 37% while the overall market expanded 19%. By year-end, its sales are expected to total 40,000 cases.

Pernod Ricard aims for Absolut to become the market leader with a 45-50% share in the next five years, and part of its marketing campaign is a 30-million-baht investment to celebrate the winter season with Absolut Parc, an outdoor vodka bar at Siam Paragon from Nov 10 to Dec 3.

The highlight will be the Absolut Iceberg ice bar, where customers can spend 10 minutes experiencing temperatures of -10 Celsius.

They'd be better served spending some of that money improving the (too medicinal) taste of their vodka.

Thailand may be third-rate in every category that matters, but in the categories of crass and boorish the Thai poseur (and his/her farang counterpart) takes a back seat to none.

It seems to me that the impact of a sub-zero shot of vodka would be greater in a warm room than a freezing one, and the couple of shots of flavored Stoli (courtesy of the very friendly young Majorcan manager) I had at Titanium a couple of years back the one time I went there did nothing to change my opinion. I will say there is nothing quite as refreshing as super-chilled Zubrovka when it's hot.

Will it be the same as titanium with their ice bar and 50 different flavours of vodka?

It was ok for the novelty value but expensive

Wow can't wait!! Maybe they should be looking at the reasons people come to Thailand. Getting away from the cold being one of them.

When are bars gonna realize that Ice Bars are crap and cold. They're just not fun after the first time.

EDIT: Forgot about the 'nip' aspect. Hardly worth 400million baht though.

One of the most over-priced places in Bangkok and the owners were complete tossers.

Hardly an ice bar either. It was a commercial walk-in freezer with a bar in it.

There's another one on Silom in Jameson's Irish Bar called -5.

The last Thai I saw drinking vodka tried to down a quarter bottle, failed and ended up almost drowning in a swimming pool. Piss-weak.

These places are of no interest to me, standing in a fridge drinking overpriced and overrated vodka..........forget it.

Give me a proper beer bar with nice friendly staff any day of the week.

Had a good time in the Stockholm absolut bar, many years ago; very expensive; company card - wouldn't spend me own cash on this, but I'm sure the sons of corrupt politicians/army/police/etc will be happy to frequent the place, and it'll do well...

    Working class tossers, at least.

In a couple of months i can stand outside my apartment in switzerland and drink vodka in sub zero temperatures.

I can actually drink vodka now in 12 degree temperatures. And next summer I can drink vodka in 35 degree temperatures.

Vodka very versatile. And it doesn't evaporate with heat. Or go all vinegary like wine.

As if i'd want to stand outside in the cold when I have a perfectly warm flat with a nice comfy sofa to sit on... and all mod cons.
