Red Shirts gather at Democracy Monument to commemorate losses in political turmoil

Red Shirts gather at Democracy Monument to commemorate losses in political turmoil

    วันอาทิตย์ ที่ 10 ต.ค. 2553

BANGKOK, Oct 10 – Supporters of the United Front for Democracy against Dictatorship (UDD) on Sunday began their rally by assembling at Saladaeng intersection and later moved to the Democracy Monument to light 20,000 red candles as a memorial gesture for those killed during the April-May protests.

Today's Red Shirt activities were led by Sombat Boonngamanong, a leading activist of the Red Sunday group.

The demonstrators offered alms to Buddhist monks in memory of the slain army officer and to others killed in the area.

After laying flowers at Saladaeng intersection where Army specialist Maj-Gen Khattiya Sawasdipol, also known as Seh Daeng, was shot on May 13 and later died at hospital, they moved to Ratchaprasong intersection to the Victory Monument and the Democracy Monument on Ratchadamneon Avenue.

More than 700 police officers have been deployed in the Ratchaprasong and Silom areas -- sites where the UDD protested against the government earlier this year in demonstrations which ended with the main Red Shirt leaders surrendering to the authorities on May 19.

Stressing that police could control the situation, National Police Chief Pol Gen Wichean Potephosree said that so far the demonstrators have only displayed symbolic rally.

However, he said sixty-four men have slipped into the Thai capital, warning that they may instigate a disturbance in Bangkok.

Without providing details on the 64 young men, Gen Wichean said he had ordered Bangkok's police commander to closely monitor their movements.

He urged the public to cooperate and inform officials if they found any suspicious objects or persons during the demonstration by UDD members. (MCOT online news)

Roads from Phan Fah bridge to Kok Wua intersection were closed, as thousands of supporters of the red-shirt movement gathered around Bangkok's Democracy Monument on Sunday afternoon, reports said.

The red-shirts chanted songs, wrote anti-coup messages on the road surface and jeered at policemen deployed to maintain order at the rally.

Pol Maj Gen Wichai Sangprapai, Metropolitan Police Division 1 commander, travelled to the red-shirt rally and called on the red-shirts to open a lane for traffic on Ratchadamnoen Klang road due to congested traffic around the rally site.

initial media reports are indicating numbers are lower ................

Thailand's 'Red Shirts' hold new, smaller protest

    Sun, 10/10/2010

Red Shirt demonstrators have held a new anti-government protest in the Thai capital.

The crowd appeared smaller than previous demonstrations and police said no violence had been reported.

There was no estimate available of the number of protesters who turned out Sunday.

It appeared to be fewer than the 8,000 to 10,000 who marked last month's anniversary of the military coup that toppled elected Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra.

The protesters include many Thaksin supporters as well as activists opposed to the military interfering in politics.

Red Shirt protests in March and April calling for early elections degenerated into violence.

About 90 people were killed by the time the army cleared the streets of demonstrators on May 19.

So, it seemed like a fine rally, no problems - good.

Numbers? I thought that the police predicted 7-10k. How many folk were there? I think around the lower end of police estimates - 5-7k? Not sure.

Red Shirts end Sunday demonstration without violence

Red Shirts end Sunday demonstration without violence

    วันอาทิตย์ ที่ 10 ต.ค. 2553

BANGKOK, Oct 10 – Supporters of the United Front for Democracy against Dictatorship (UDD) dispersed from the capital's Democracy Monument and Ratchadamnoen Avenue Sunday evening, ending their activities to commemorate the loss of lives during the April-May political turmoil.

The Red Shirts lit red candles at Democracy Monument around 6pm before beginning to vacate the area peacefully and reopening traffic lanes after a number of demonstrators spilled into traffic lanes Sunday afternoon causing traffic congestion in the area.

The demonstrators began gathering Sunday morning at the King Rama VI Monument at Lumpini Park, making offerings to Buddhist monks in memory of the slain army officer Army specialist Maj-Gen Khattiya Sawasdipol, also known as Seh Daeng and to others killed in the area.

Police tightened security as the protesters moved from Ratchaprasong intersection to the Victory Monument and the Democracy Monument on Ratchadamneon Avenue and laid flowers at locations where Red Shirts clashed with the military.

Overall the conduct of the Sunday demonstration was in order and there was no violation of law, the police said.

The state of emergency is still in effect in Bangkok and three adjacent provinces including Nonthaburi, Samut Prakan and Pathum Thani.

The Cabinet on Tuesday extended the state of emergency imposed in Bangkok and its three adjacent provinces since April for another three months, to maintain law and order following intelligence reports which
projected continuing disturbances in the areas.

The Red Shirts, supporters of ex-premier Thaksin Shinawatra, held a mass rally in Bangkok from March to May, demanding that Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva dissolve Parliament and call new elections.

Ratchaprasong, Bangkok’s prime business area, was a scene of disorder four months ago when security forces moved against the UDD protesters who had staged rally.

Eighty-nine persons were killed, and at least 1,900 were wounded during the two months of confrontations before the protest ended on May 19. (MCOT online news)

    Passed off without incident.

But the reds were suggesting 20,000 would go.
