Southern Violence : Two die, two hurt in Thai ambush attacks

Two die, two hurt in Thai ambush attacks
    February 9, 2010

Suspected militants have shot and killed a government official and a teacher in the latest ambush attacks in Thailand's restive south, police say.

They said a 41-year-old Muslim district leader in the Raman area of troubled Yala province was killed when militants hiding near his home shot him early on Monday morning in his backyard.

On Monday evening, two suspected militants on a motorcycle targeted a 51-year-old male Buddhist teacher in Pattani province as he rode his motorcycle towards his home in neighbouring Yala.

The men set fire to the teacher's body and stole his motorcycle.
At sunset, another group of suspected militants travelling by car opened fire on two local defence volunteers, aged 29 and 35, riding a motorcycle in Pattani province. Both volunteers remain in hospital with serious injuries.

More than 4,100 people have died since shadowy separatist militants launched an insurgency in the Muslim-majority southern region in January 2004.

The militants never publicly state their aims but often target figures of the Thai state including state officials and public school teachers.

Tensions have simmered in the region, formerly an autonomous Malay Muslim sultanate, since it was annexed in 1902 by mainly Buddhist Thailand.
