PM to explain national situation at UN meeting

(BangkokPost.com) - Prime Minister and Defence Minister Samak Sundaravej spoke during his weekly talk show on the state-run National Broadcasting Services of Thailand (NBT) channel on Sunday that he plans to explain Thailand’s civil strife at the United Nations (UN) General Assembly session, which is scheduled to convene on September 23.

Mr Samak said he is not afraid that a coup will take place after his departure to the UN General Assembly, similar to the 2006 military coup that was staged while ousted premier Thaksin Shinawatra attended the UN conference.

The prime minister said he will ask the Court of Appeals to postpone a ruling on a libel suit on September 25 because he will attend the UN General Assembly to clarify the country’s situation to the international community.

Concerning the heavy rain and hail at Government House on Friday, Mr Samak said the Meteorological Department stated that the incident was normal. However, he viewed that such occurrence was not normal because he had never seen hail falling at Government House in 73 years of his life. He said he did not order a plane to sprinkle ice over the compound.

His appearance at the UN will be an auspicious day in the worldwide reputation of Thailand. Can you imagine the pride all Thais will feel in having such a distinguished and eloquent man represent the country before a global audience?

I guess they don't want to get banned in Thailand. The comments on this article on the Economists website are very interesting though, especially one concerning rumours in Thailand that the PAD is being orchestrated by a very powerful woman, something hinted at in the article.

Probably an unfounded rumour but did read somewhere that a booted player was toying with the idea of interfering with the known laws of physics, that B follows A.

IF so, silence from above may be understandable.

"The world is watching (Thailand)," said Mr. Samak, adding that he and the army chief had already told foreign envoys and military attaches posted to Bangkok that there will be no more coup d'etats.

The diplomats have said that coups without reason are totally unacceptable, he added.

Hmm, I thought that was rather tactful considering they're clearly aware of the way lese majeste (and most other) laws work around here.

But it is whispered that the PAD has protectors “on high”—hardline army generals and possibly figures in the royal palace (though not the king himself).
I'm probably reading way too much into that, this thing is becoming so surreal that it's difficult to get a grip on the reality of it, if any I read the comments on the economist page at the same time as I read the article and the comments reinforced how I interpreted the above. It doesn't really fit in with what I know about the historical relationship between the PM and the person mentioned on the Economist page but I guess there are no real friendships in high politics. It's hard to really know what's going on at the moment, especially as not much is happening right now and many people are frustrated, bored, and scared while waiting for the storm to burst , it's all reading between the lines, under the counter conversations, and rumours, many of the issues being ones it's extremely dangerous to talk about publicly in Thailand.

Nor I. Given the subtle and not so subtle actions of some over the last several years, there is a person behind it. IMO, it is not the one most suspect.

You know, with all the permutations, I confess that I have trouble keeping up with what to make of most of it. Just when you think you have figured out this is a class war, the unions throw you a curve. Just when you think you have figured out the PPP and Samak are all a ploy to amend the constitution to bring back frog face, you realize it's hard to argue against 'democratically elected' twice.

why is that a myth; there was an election, the majority of the people voted for his party, he is the leader of that party

Maybe you could say the same for Gordon Brown, nobody actually voted for him either

If B wasn't so close to T, that could leave out C and negate the lack of little letters. But B and T are tight and the maternal vice tightens. I'd say A needs a set of b's and would be best served by not acting like such a k.
