Chinese Man Arrested in Bangkok for Fake SMS Station Scamming

On November 19th, 2024, Thai national media reported that Thai cyber police arrested a Chinese national in connection with a mobile SMS scam operating in Bangkok’s Sukhumvit area.

The investigation began after a complaint on November 11th from a shopper who received a fake SMS claiming to be from a major mobile provider. AIS engineers confirmed the messages were unauthorized, leading authorities to track the mobile transmitter.

Police apprehended the suspect, publicly identified as Mr. Yang Mu Yi, on November 13th and found the device in his vehicle actively broadcasting signals (False Base Station). Investigations revealed nearly one million scam messages had been sent in just three days.

The sophisticated device simulated a telecom base station and operated without proper licensing from the National Broadcasting and Telecommunications Commission (NBTC). The suspect faces multiple charges, including operating unlicensed telecom equipment and unauthorized use of radio frequencies.

Authorities see this arrest as a significant blow to call center scams targeting Thai citizens and are continuing their crackdown on tech-related crime in collaboration with private sector partners.

Throw the book at the bastard. These kinds of crims harm Thailand's excellent reputation.
