Thais over 60 to receive Bt10,000 by Chinese New Year

Thais who are over 60 will be the next group to receive the 10,000 baht cash benefit under the “digital wallet” payable before the Chinese New Year.

The policy committee on economic stimulation projects, chaired by Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra, agreed at its meeting today to go ahead with the second phase of the digital wallet scheme by giving the 10,000 baht cash to about 4 million people in the 60-plus age group. This will cost the taxpayer 40 billion baht.

The next phase is expected between April and June next year, pending the completion of the digital payment system, according to sources close to the committee.

About 14.5 million disabled people and holders of state welfare cards were the first to receive the 10,000 baht in late September. About 145 billion baht from the Central Fund was used to finance that phase.

The committee also agreed, in principle, to assist with mortgage and car loan indebtedness by providing a three-year moratorium on interest payments.

That's a lot of baht for many of the old Thais out in the boonies. I trust they'll remember this come the next election.
