British student who disappeared after a beach party on a Cambodian island

Amelia Bambridge, 21, who was on her gap year, was last seen in the resort of Koh Rong on Wednesday.

Members of her family, from Worthing, Sussex, flew from the UK to Cambodia where searches of the sea, beaches and jungle have begun.

Ms Bambridge's sister Georgie said the family was in touch with police and trying to stay strong as concerns grew.

Friends reported Amelia's "out-of-character" disappearance after her belongings were found on a beach.

Her handbag - which had her purse, phone and bank cards in it - was found on a beach 40 minutes away where she had been at a party
That does not bode well according to her parents.

There seems to be a suspension of disbelief among the British middle classes, and Europeans for that matter, who believe that SE Asia isn't a third world destination where the populations comprise a significant strata of society who, given the opportunity, will kill, rape and steal on no more than a passing whim and give it no more thought than they would to eating a bowl of rice.

These backpack destinations, especially in Thailand and Cambodia, are not a playground conferring immunity to indulgent post adolescents from the West, but as long as the stupid and ignorant believe otherwise, they'll keep coming every year and every year they will be robbed, raped and murdered.

Four days is a long time to be missing in a place so small. Have to fear the worst, sadly.

A few pictures in the link below.

British backpacker Amelia Bambridge missing on Cambodian island

A British student who disappeared after a beach party on a Cambodian island has been reported missing.

Ryan Harris said "alarm bells started" when she could not be found after the party.

"She always sticks with the group. She never wanders off on her own," he said.

Your post is missing an obvious caveat.

In the hyper 3rd wave feminist era we are in, we cant even so much as say that the problem here isn't young naive tourists. But young naive female tourists. It should not be controversial to say that female tourists under 30 should not wander about by themselves at all. And they should take extra caution and only go to the areas with the best safety record. But they don't. They all get pissed up and travel like the boys. And thats the problem.

This is an infamous case in the making now.

She was travelling with a bloke named Ryan Harris. Nose ring and all, her traveling mate.

Mr Harris said Koh Rong was "quite a small island" which someone could walk around in two or three hours.

"You might lose your friend after a night out but you'll see them in 20 minutes or you might see them the next morning," he said.
Isn't that ironic. You might lose your friend after a night out he says. What a f**** thing to say.
Mr Harris, who said he was on a neighbouring island with another group at the time of the party, said volunteers had come together to search for his friend.
Oh really Mr. Harris. You are her travelling mate but she was on a neighboring island eh ? Not with you eh ? Maybe that's a problem.

Ryan Harris said "alarm bells started" when she could not be found after the party.
You mean she couldn't be found after the party ended on your island.

The venue is of course renown for licentious behaviour among western youth looking to create an inexpensive libertarian experience in a tropical paradise unfettered by bad weather, law enforcement and the strictures of social norms dictated by the mundanity of ordinary life.

Inevitably, in this milieu of contrived hedonism, opportunistic predators will circle the honeypot looking for victims, like sharks lured by the scent of blood in a lagoon rich in easy pickings.

The naive ingenue should never, ever, swim alone in these waters.

Doubtless true, but still only a 'wise after the event' nob blames the swimmer (and apparently also someone on a nearby island ) in these circumstances.

"Wise after the event " has fuck all to do with it Cecilia, western women have been mugged, raped and murdered over the past two decades in "these circumstances" but as we all know not one of the victims ever believes it would happen to her.

The point is, no young woman dressed in skimpy clothing should ever walk alone along a deserted path in this fucking snake pit of a region after nightfall, particularly in the early hours after a night on the grog and a few spliffs - it is asking for it.

But that's the whole point of youth, one is led by the desire for experiences but the trouble is, experience can be a savagely expensive teacher.

I'd call you a 3rd wave fem boy for saying that. But you are half right. This is where the culture is. And relations between the sexes.

People like you really believe that there is no difference between 21 year old female travelers and 21 year old male travelers.

All this woman probably needed was her male friend to say, "hey that's probably not a good idea to drift around by yourself" And she probably wouldn't have. And she would still be here today. But you and Mr. Harris , didn't even think of that. Because then you'd be her nanny right ?

    Found this:

Ms Bambridge met Ryan Harris, 18, on her trip.

"I met her in Phnom Penh and we got the boat to Koh Rong, we all spent a few days together and met up with a few other people in a big group,” Mr Harris said. I assumed she would turn up but I have since travelled another 12 hours on a bus to Siem Reap and she still has not been found. She is supposed to be in Siem Reap by now.”

So she literally boarded the plane and traveled to SE Asia to do the full moon party circuit by herself. I had assumed Mr. Harris was from an extended group of friends back home. Even if you cant travel on the exact same days, its not a bad idea to have a friend to cross paths with at least.

Judging by what he's saying, the victim here really liked to get around. Again. An alone traveling 21 year old female is one thing. But it sounds like she also used poor judgement on top of that.

Any guesses at this point ?

With the information we have, Im going with the shady local men+alcohol+white woman by herself scenario.

She was supposed to be checking out of her hostel on the Thursday. The parents were contacted when they realised she had not come back.

The parents were the ones who raised the alarm as apparently she was quite reliable.

    You're not a parent I take it.

I'm presuming from your post you have experience in managing a 21 year old "child"?

Post 18 they are considered adults in the UK and they are well aware of their rights.

One does strive to instil a sense of order, acceptable behaviour and responsibility in ones children but unfortunately they expand the boundaries of "their ways", as the years grow and influencers beyond your control take priority sometimes.

Some nights we received the agreed phone call to be picked up from wherever they had been to, others a call from a friend of hers, wanting to get rid of a problem onto us. Whichever it was, I sped off and dealt with another Friday night call and consequences.

Maybe the parents had previous experience of her behaviour problems and she had not complied with agreed contact rules?

    Lets hope she's found soon.

^ Fingers crossed, but sadly this is looking a lot more sinister after 5 days missing.

According to the Daily Mail her phone was amongst the other belongings (in a picture) found in her backpack on the beach.

Can you link to the Daily Mail? I believe it was a problem at one point? Anyway, the article is easily found.
