ANG THONG, 24th September 2018 (NNT) – This week is the second of only two occasions a year when the sun rises directly behind the head of the reclining Buddha at Wat Chunintrapamul.

The temple is located in Intrapramul sub-district, Pho Thong district of Ang Thong province. Twice a year, once in March and once in September, the temple’s reclining Buddha is aligned with the rising sun, resulting in a phenomenon in which the sun is directly eclipsed by the statue’s head. This year, light refraction will allow the phenomenon to last longer than usual.

The vision occurs this year on September 26, after which the sun will rise and set without aligning with the statue.

The event coincides with the equinox, when both day and night are of equal duration.
