KRABI, 22 September 2018 (NNT) – Owners of jewelry containing a dorsal fin from a bowmouth guitarfish (Rhina ancylostoma) are legally obliged to report it to authorities by November 29 or pay a fine.
Krabi Provincial Office of Fisheries chief Saen Sri-ngarm said items from the fish, which are on the Wildlife Protection List, require an official permit or the owner may have to pay 40,000 baht in fine.
The Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment put 12 aquatic species on the list in 2003 to prevent extinction.
The 12 species include Mobula thurstoni, Mobula kuhlii, Mobula eregoodootenkee, Mobula japanica, Manta alfredi, Manta birostris, Himantura chaophraya, Rhina ancylostoma, Pristis zijsron, Anoxypristis cuspidata, Pristis pectinata, and Pristis pristis. Among these species, only Himantura chaophraya is granted the permission for commercial reproduction.
