BANGKOK, 9th May 2018 (NNT) – Khon Kaen province has released water from its Bueng Nong Kot dam in preparation for more rain, with police in Bangkok ready to facilitate traffic flow during the start of the new school semester likely to be exacerbated by stormy conditions.
Meanwhile, Deputy Commander of the Royal Thai Police, Pol Gen Sriwara Rangsipramnakul chaired a preparatory meeting on traffic management at the start of the new school semester, pressing all police to accommodate citizens while making a request to construction sites on major roads to provide as much space for vehicles as possible, pointing to Ladprao and Ramkhamhaeng roads in particular. He also urged parents and schools not to allow drop offs to take too long as they worsen congestion.
The deputy commander is to personally inspect any areas during the start of the school semester where there are reports of traffic snarls.
Meanwhile in Khon Kaen province, Disaster Prevention and Mitigation Office 6 has employed water pumps to remove water from Bueng Nong Kot dam over a period of 22 days, aiming to bring it down by 30 centimeters so that it may handle forecast downpours.
The Mekong River in Nong Khai province has been rising after days of rain and has reached four meters in the province’s Muang district with the likelihood of further rises. Only half of the province’s revered Buddha relic is currently above water and tourists wishing to pay homage to it are being urged to do so soon. Preparations are being made to reinforce the province’s river banks against an overflow.
Deputy Governor of Uthai Thani, Maitree Traitilanan meantime, has called for disaster prevention and mitigation rehearsals among officers this week in anticipation of flooding and runoff problems. The practice-run is taking place at the province’s Ramkamhaeng University campus.
