Uninsured Brit In Critical Condition Following Hua Hin Motorbike Accident

18th March 2018 by Stickboy BKK

A British tourist is in a serious condition following a motorbike accident in Hua Hin with his family desperately trying to raise funds online to get him essential medial treatment.

Mark Haley, 55, from Borehamwood, was hit from behind by a car as he was riding a motorbike on Friday in the popular resort town.

According to the GoFundMe page he suffered a fractured spine, fractured pelvis, broken ribs, and a collapsed right lung. He is currently in ICU in an induced coma on a ventilator.

Due to the Brit not taking out insurance for the trip his family are now trying to raise 2 million baht (£50,000) to cover costs including a 200,000 baht (£4,500) helicopter transfer to a hospital in Bangkok claiming the poor condition of roads in Thailand and the severity of his injuries means he cannot make the journey by ambulance.
An update on Saturday stated Mr Haley remains in stable, but critical condition with medical bills stacking up with an overnight stay in hospital coming to 400,000 baht (£9,000).

Why is an overnight stay 400,000 baht?

You can buy a nice car for that!

    These hospitals are crooks.

These stories just keep coming, no insurance, BS, motorbike is insured, car is insured, if he bought his ticket on visa or MasterCard, he's insured.
400,000 for one night, get real, local hospitals treats loads of accident victims, my local charges 600 Baht a night for a private room.

55, not 19 teen and stupid, should have known better than to rent a motorbike here.

Here's one for sale on E-bay, only 3,000 usd. So why does the hospital charge 400,000 baht every day? They're not that expensive. The hospital is over charging because he's a farang. Farang got big money.

If he was insured why did he get a bill, the insurance covers that, everything goes through them..

Most insurance policies are international, they are interlinked, BUPA, AXA etc they operate in Thailand, if the policy covers oversea travel, show the card, that's it, computers are amazing.

Thai's pay the same price. With the health care providers teaming up with the doctors and big pharma the horrendous price of emergency health care has come to Thailand...

    Thai's pay the same price.
Foreigners are always charged a higher rate than Thais for treatment at private hospitals in Thailand.

To do that they'd need a dual pricing setup on their computers, so I have my doubts.

For expats like you that may be the case Tax. But not for ones who have settled into a nice life here. I take about 99% of what you say with a huge grain of salt.

doctors have told me this....... as has a relative who works in the accounts department of one of bangkoks larger private hospitals.
when i lived here full time i had health insurance with an international insurance company based in thailand. they also told me that foreigners are charged a higher rate than thais at the private hospitals here.

    (and anecdotally,

my wife and i went for dental treatment at a private hospital in bangkok, we both had exactly the same treatment, i.e. a simple scaling and polishing. my wife was in the chair for 25 mins. i was next in, with the same dentist, and i was in the chair for 15 mins.

my charge was 150b higher than my wifes. when i queried the different charges, the cashier called the dentist and was told that the calcium deposits were harder to remove from my teeth than my wifes. as an ex dentist i knew exactly how much scale there was around my teeth, ( not very much) and exactly how much there was around my wifes ( also not very much) and am well aware of exactly what is entailed in providing the simplest and most common of all dental procedures

at the same hospital, my wife had a bone density scan, after it was done i thought about having one done and went to the enquiry desk to ask the cost, the receptionist accessed her screen and quoted me a cost approximately 15% higher than my wife had just paid. the procedure for a bone density scan is simply a specialised x-ray followed by a consultation with the doctor to explain the results. it is the same procedure for everybody.)

To do that they'd need a dual pricing setup on their computers, so I have my doubts.
just press the F or farang key to add the %mark up to the total!

it may be different at government hospitals, i had a course of physio. for a shoulder problem at the government hospital, and the cost was the same for all, because the chat in the waiting room was all about the cost of doctors consultations, x rays and the physio treatment itself. we all paid the same price.

I say it doesn't happen. If they were found out farangs would avoid the place which wouldn't be good for business.
Even though Bumrungrad emphasizes top-rate quality over pricing, they are still able to offer their medical services at affordable rates.
Not only do medical procedures often cost less in Thailand than in the bureaucratic-filled Western hospitals, Bumrungrad does not impose the much-feared dual pricing system. As a matter of fact, prices are the same for both Thai citizens and foreign patients.

It was a miserable old git surcharge.

And fair enough too! Should've been higher.

then they have changed their policy since i last went there 4 years ago. the hospitals i mentioned in my posts were visited within the past 6 months.
