Sakorn Sachiwa, who was believed to be dead, spoke to local TV Thai PBS about his relatives' reaction when he returned homeSakorn Sachiwa, 44, explained he returned home after having worked for almost two years in other parts of the country, and he is now reclaiming his identity.
Sakorn, who's from the north-eastern province of Sisaket, was believed to have passed away after a police officer in Bangkok found his identity card on a dead body.
His relatives were told in May to travel to Bangkok to bring back the body, but were unsure about the identity of the corpse – it had all its teeth intact, while Sakorn was missing his front teeth.
An official cremation ceremony then took place without the man's knowledge.
Sakorn is now reclaiming his identity at a local administration office.
He says he lost his identity card and had not been in touch with his family members since he left home two years ago.
District chief in Sisaket, Pornchai Wongngam, said the process to reinstate his identity will take a few weeks.
According to reports, Sakorn's family asked elders in the village to confirm that the man is in fact Sakorn.
A police investigator said the case will now have to be reopened to determine the identity of the body that was cremated.
