Missing since Feb 15th, belongings left in room, but reportedly she was planning to move on to Ko Samui- why has it taken this long for her disappearance to be reported?

Does a certain prominent local family own the Samui Times?

Don't go blaming Monsod and his gang otherwise they'll be a very public alibi with dna and cctv that will miraculously disappear when anyone asks an uncomfortable question.

Missing Russian loved free diving, but was troubled

SURAT THANI - Police have expanded their search for Valentina Novozhyonova, 23, who went missing on Koh Tao more than two weeks ago after discovering that she was a free-diving enthusiast and possibly suffered from a mental problem.

Koh Tao police on Sunday learned from a Russian man identified only as Alexander that he had met the woman on Koh Tao as they shared an interest in free diving.

The information corresponded with police finding that her weight belt, fins, goggles and a towel were not in her room. Police, volunteers and local leaders went to possible free diving locations of Koh Tao to try to find the blue towel as they believed that the woman might have left it where she was diving.

Pol Lt Col Napha Senathip, deputy chief of the Koh Tao police station, said on Sunday that the mobile phone of Ms Novozhyonova showed that she used the Line messaging software to seek advice from a psychiatrist. The communication indicated she had an unreasonable fear and the psychiatrist had advised her to seek help quickly.

Police also found medication in her bag and asked a medical authority to identify it.

"She was seen near her room between 5.40 and 6pm on Feb 15. She inquired about diving and reservations for a ferry trip to Koh Samui on 3pm on Feb 16. We learned that she did not make the trip and should be on Koh Tao," Pol Lt Col Napha said.

Surat Thani police chief Pol Maj Gen Apichart Boonsriroj said police asked locals, tourists and volunteers to look for traces of the woman near boulders, dive sites and marine areas and contacted 11 free diving firms and divers' ferry services but had not uncovered any clues.

"Police are checking local surveillance camera footage especially from 6pm of Feb 15. We have not seen the person anywhere. So we cannot confirm whether she is still alive or not. We cannot conclude a cause of the disappearance until we have a clue," Pol Maj Gen Apichart said.

Looks like she's swimming with the fishes and the diving weight still attached.
    But what do we know?
The small island of Koh Tao has a dodgy history for farang deaths, no doubt this case will be under the spotlight for some time.
The police have confirmed that they have no clue, no surprise.
Has Nom Sod got an alibi?

Looking for excuses anywhere but locally.

So, she didn't get lost diving....strike that avenue for an excuse.

I'm doubtful a backpacker would lug a weight belt around the world. Cheaper to hire locally.

Really? So the island cops can read Russian?

FFS, look at your local boy. Where was he on the 15th after 6 pm.
    Case solved.

Divers join the search for missing Russian

Thai and foreign divers will launch a search of the missing Russian girl by scouring the sea at five diving spots around Chaloke Ban Kao bay on Tuesday.

The underwater search followed a meeting on Monday between Koh Tao police headed by Pol Lt-Col Chokechai Sutthimek, chief inspector of Koh Tao police, and representatives of diving companies.

Police have shifted their attention to underwater search after it was learned that the Russian, 23-year old Ms Valentina Novozhynova, was a free diver and that she might have gone missing while diving.

Examination of CCTV system on the popular island found out that the Russian woman went into a convenience store near her hostel, Koh Tao Hostel at about 8.45 am on February 15. A party was held at an entertainment venue on the night of February 15 and police were investigating to find out whether the Russian attended the party or not.

A French free diving instructor, meanwhile, said that she usually teaches her students to dive at depth between 10-20 metres.

Police said that the Russian had communicated with a friend online that she would try to break her own free diving record of 22.3 metres. She was seen on CCTV leaving for a diving session on February 16.

That's deep for free diving, IMO.

And we're assuming she did it alone without a 'buddy' / parner?

Before competition attempt, freedivers perform preparation sequence, which usually consists of physical stretching, mental exercise and breath exercise. It may include sequention of variable length static apnea and special purging deep breaths. Result of preparation sequence is slower metabolism, lower heart rate and breath rate, lower level of CO2 in bloodstream[30] and overall mental equilibrium. Failing ordinary warning signals or crossing mental barrier by strong will may lead to shallow water blackout or deep water blackout.[9][31] Trained freedivers are well aware of this and will only dive under strict and first aid competent supervision.[32]

However this does not eliminate the risk of deep or shallow water blackout. All safe freedivers have a 'buddy' who accompanies them, observing from within the water at the surface.[citation needed] Due to the nature of the sport, any practice of freediving must include strict adherence to safety measures as an integral part of the activity, and all participants must also be adept in rescue and resuscitation. Without proper training and supervision, freediving/apnea/breath-hold diving is extremely dangerous.[clarification needed]: The death of Nicholas Mevoli, a diver from New York, highlights the dangers of freediving. He died on 17 November 2013 after completing a dive to a depth of 72 metres.[33]

It's obvious she didn't go diving. She was seen in the evening booking a diving trip for the next day.
And that was the last time she was seen.

The belt itself weighs ounces. A free diver would almost certainly want a belt they trust. The weights that go on the belt are freely available anywhere.

Enquiring about travel options also seems an unlikely way to prepare to commit suicide, which the story rather keenly keeps suggesting is what happened.
