Flash floods wreck havoc in southern provinces

Two villagers were believed to be drowned after they were swept away by strong currents from flash flood as they separately went fishing in Phatthalung province.

The first victim was a 47-year male went fishing in a stream in Tambon Nanod in Muang district and the second, a 67-year old woman, was reported to have gone missing as she went fishing in Khao Chaison district. The identities of both victims were not known at press time.

Meanwhile, it was reported that flash flood started to hit the municipal area of Muang district at about 3 am on Sunday and, hours later, put the whole area under water measured at between 30-50 centimetres.

Municipal workers tried desperately to drain water out of the township, but it appeared that the effort was futile as more rains kept lashing.

Officials of the district hospital have sought help from the municipal administration as flash flood inundated its compound. However, the hospital still remains operational as normal.

In Nakhon Si Thammarat, the provincial administration was in the process of declaring seven of the nine districts struck by flash flood since Saturday disaster zones. Three people were reported to have died from flood-related
    incidents.

Several roads in the municipal area of Muang district have become impassable for small vehicles as the level of floodwater is steadily rising as rains keep pounding the province unabatedly.

On Saturday, Mr Chatchai Promlert, director-general of Public Disaster Prevention and Mitigation Department issued an urgent directive to all public disaster prevention centres to watch out for landslides and flash floods in ten southern provinces and to be on standby to rush rescue and relief teams and materials to areas where they are needed.

Floods in Southern Thailand affect some Southern railway routes

BANGKOK, 4 December 2016 (NNT) - The State Railway of Thailand (SRT) Governor disclosed that heavy rain and flooding in many areas of the South has affected some railway routes.

SRT Governor Wutthichart Kallayanamit said that he had received reports of railway obstructions due to the prolonged heavy rains in many southern areas.

The SRT was forced to change the departure and arrival stations of some southern train trips during 3-4 December 2016, due to the weather conditions for the safety of passengers, he said.

The train trips from Bangkok to Trang and Nakhon Si Thammarat will only reach Thung Song Junction station, but the Bangkok to Sungai Kolok route will operate normally in its entirety.

Passengers wishing to travel by train on southern routes can inquire for more information before traveling by calling hotline 1690, with services available around the clock.

The big Songkhla flood of 5 years ago, the water was over a metre deep in my current house (though I was not here at the time). We were quite worried this big rain since it went on for days and days, but nothing close to a flood occurred and now it has stopped raining.

I can remember my second trip to Thailand.

I arrived on Koh Tao late December 88, had absolutely brilliant weather and thought I was in heaven.

Being a newbie I assumed this was how it was, How wrong was I.

Near on every year since the South of Thailand gets blown away in December and one can never assume December or even early January will be calm and bursting with sunshine.

It's a roll of the dice in the South and totally unpredictable.

In the middle of the city there is an official pole with flood level records and the years they occurred.
Over the last 5 floods, each one has got progressively higher, and with a frequency of about every 5 years.
Yet all the new houses being built are not on stilts, but flat on the ground.

Flood waters subside in 3 southern provinces

BANGKOK, 6 December 2016 (NNT) - Flooding in three of the 11 flood-affected southern provinces has improved but the government has continued to be wary about the situation. Army officers have been instructed to assist people in the submerged areas.

Spokesperson of the National Council for Peace and Order (NCPO) Col. Sirichan Nga-thong said army chief Gen. Chalermchai Sitthinart, in his capacity as the NCPO secretary-general, expressed his concerns over the flooding in the southern region. He instructed all sides to urgently resolve the situation in order to help the affected people while ensuring security for them. The Fourth Army Area Command would cooperate will relevant units in assisting the flood-affected people in the 11 provinces, said the spokesperson.

The Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation under the Ministry of Interior has reported that there were 11 flood-affected provinces in the southern region from 1-6 December 2016 and the flood conditions already improved in three of the provinces, including Krabi, Yala and Narathiwat. The department said it would install water pumps to help push flood water into the sea and water catchment areas. It will also survey the damage in order to provide assistance for the flood-affected people in accordance with regulations of the Ministry of Finance.

In Yala, the State Railway of Thailand has announced to cancel all trains to terminal stations. Trains can only reach the Thung Song Junction Station due to heavy rains and flooding conditions in many areas.

In Songkhla, 10 districts have been declared disaster zones. Almost 24,000 households in the province have been affected by the flooding.

Floods close 100 schools in Nakhon Si Thammarat and Trang

MORE than 100 schools in the South are remaining closed in the wake of serious flooding including in Nakhon Si Thammarat province, where officials at 88 state schools have said they will be closed until today.

“Most of these schools are in the province’s educational service area 1,” Nakhon Si Thammarat Governor Charoen Tipayapongtada said yesterday.

All 23 districts in the province had been inundated, disrupting the lives of more than 261,000 people, he said. The floods were also blamed for five deaths in the province, while at least 12 people have been killed in the south.

Flood death toll in South rises to 14

Floods continued to wreak havoc to extensive areas in the southern provinces today with death toll now rising to 14, six of them are children.

The main Phetkasem highway and the Asian Highway to the South are also partly submerged causing inconvenience for motor vehicles, particularly the section which runs from Chumphon to Surat Thani.

In Chumphon, rainfalls for three consecutive days caused flash flood to flow into the provincial seat, particularly the Asian highway route 41, the kilometer marker number 1 in front of Chumphon Provincial Electricity Authority office in Khun Krating subdistrict of the provincial seat where the flood water was 30-40 centremetre high for one kilometer long.

Authorities were deployed to facilitate and warn the motorists. Some parts of the eight kilometer long Muang Chumphon Road, the main road to the city, was also flooded.

Six districts of Chumphon are still under water. They are Muang, Thung Tako, Sawi, Pathiew, Tha Sae and Lang Suan.

Over 70 local roads are submerged, including parts of the Phetkasem highway.

Several schools are closed today as floods continued.

Meanwhile heavy rains in Samui also caused flooding in many areas of Koh Samui and Nakhon Si Thammarat.

In Phatthalung province, floods continued for the fifth day in all 11 districts.

The situation was worrisome particularly the area adjacent to the Songkhla lake including the provincial seat and Khuan Khanun district where the flood water was still high.

One more villager was missing in the strong tide of the flood in Pa Phayom district of Phatthalung.

Since the province was flooded on December 2, three were drowned in the floods.

In Trang, soldiers used flat-bottomed boat to help evacuate children and elders at Ban Nong Bua in Nataluang subdistrict in Trang provincial seat.

They were stranded at the second storey of their homes. The flood water has come quickly and the water level has increased very fast so that they did not have time to move their belongings and escape from their homes.
The flood water was 2-3.50 metres high and dozen of homes were inundated to the rooftop due to the lower lying areas.

The road from Na Non intersection to Or Tor Kor intersection from kilometer marker number 2 to 6 was closed because of the strong tide of 40-50 centimetres high flood water. The road was impassable.

For the overall situation, flood in Trang was still in critical condition, eight districts were hard hit which were Ratsada, Huay Yod, Wang Wiset, Na Yong, Yan Ta Khao, Pa Lian, Kantang and the provincial seat.

    Floods persist in southern region

SURAT THANI, 22 DECEMBER 2016 (NNT) – Government agencies have expedited relief efforts in many areas of the southern region as floods persist.

Flooding in Ta Chang District of Surat Thani has begun to subside but 6 villages in the area have now been underwater for over 10 days with drainage impeded by high tides. Waters in the inundated communities have begun to emit foul odors and some 200 Rai of farmland, mostly rubber and oil palm, are now under threat or irreparable damage. District officials are working to pump the water out of the villages to aid in drainage but are requesting emergency assistance.

Most districts of Narathiwat province affected by flooding have continued to be submerged with further water threatening even more areas. Irrigation officials in the province are installing 4 large pumps to draw down the level of the Sungaikolok River so that it won’t burst its banks.

In Yala, a warning against flashfloods and landslides has been issued as more rains are expected in the already hard hit area. Districts being affected include Betong, Banangsta and Raman.

The Meteorological Department has indicated a low pressure front over the Gulf of Thailand will bring rains across the southern region during this period and has warned citizens to prepare for flooding accordingly.
