Royal Project Begins Sale of Locally Produced Caviar

CHIANG MAI - The Royal Project and the Research and Development Inland Fisheries Centre have announced the sale of locally produced rainbow trout caviar after successful breeding programs in Jomthong district.

The breeding program began in 2005, and was very successful. Today they have over 20 tonnes of Rainbow Trout producing large amounts of caviar that can be sold at a local price.

Normally, sturgeon in the Caspian Sea, Russia, are the main source for such caviar, with prices reaching 200,000 baht per kilo.

However, thanks to the successful breeding project, Royal Project will no begin selling their premium caviar at 5,000 baht per 100 grams.

To order the caviar, you can call Royal Projects on 053 211613.

At 50,000 baht a kilo for the fish eggs, I'd rather eat the fish. I like a nice bit of grilled trout.

No chance. If you read, it is "trout caviar"...more like the tuff they throw on your sushi.

When the Russians were occupying Afghanistan, we used to get (in New Delhi) large tins of great caviar for next to nothing. Sold in Kabul on the black market by Russian military and smuggled out by crew on weekly Indian Airlines flights. Big tins of Russian crab meat as well.

So what does caviar taste like?

I'd rather have a cod roe and chips on Blackpool promenade

If it is from Sturgeon it is called caviar or now Black Caviar.

If it is from Salmon, Trout et al is is called Roe. But yes clever marketing people can call is Red caviar.

Roe or Red Caviar as has been stated already is used in sushi.

Just another example of a name of good stuff being usurped for normal dross.

I suppose one could eat red caviar with sparkling wine, as long as it is described as such.
Better to think inside the pub, than outside the box?

Fish roe is quite cheap in Thailand. I wonder where the market is in Thailand for roe at 50,000 baht a kilo. Perhaps exporting it would be a better idea.

Thanks, didn't notice it was trout "caviar" ... so the price is not good, trout eggs are sold between 70 and 150 € in Europe, a bit more expensive in UK and US (double the price figure) as it sports the name "caviar" there, so Thailand just followed the english/american trend with this name ...

That's 100gm, a mug full (one fish worth) of trout or salmon roe for Bt5,000.

Bt 5,000 per fish! That's a ridiculous price!
