UPDATE Police disclose chronology of events leading to Amokrane Sabet’s death, officer stabbed 8 times before Sabet shot repeatedly

French national Amokrane Sabet, 49, has reportedly been shot dead by police officers in Canggu after an altercation early on Monday afternoon when he allegedly stabbed a police officer.

Badung Police Chief Tony Binsar confirmed the incident to local newspaper Tribun Bali.
But Binsar was apparently reluctant to reveal anything more at the moment about the ex-MMA fighter’s death.

“Later, the head Bali Police spokesman will explain the full chronology. But, it definitely happened,” Binsar said, as quoted by Tribun.

News of Sabet’s death has erupted on social media, from lengthy Facebook conversation threads to news posts on Instagram.

Jakarta. A French citizen, who had become notorious for violent and unruly behavior in recent years, was shot dead in Badung district, Bali, early on Monday (02/05) after he allegedly killed a police officer who was attempting to arrest him.

Bali Police chief Insp. Gen. Sugeng Priyanto said the incident occurred when officers were about to take the 49-year-old Amokrane "Kiane" Sabet into custody after he repeatedly failed to show up for questioning related to an assault case.

The Algerian-born former mixed martial arts (MMA) fighter allegedly resisted arrest and stabbed one of the officers eight times, fatally wounding him.

"One of our officer was killed after the French national stabbed him with a knife. We shot him to dead after our he ignored our warning shots," Sugeng told reporters, as quoted by Tribunnews.

Sabet died after sustaining several bullet wounds, including at least one to the head.

Police were investigating an assault case against Sabet following complaints from several people in the Berawa, Seminyak and Kuta areas of Badung district that he allegedly refused to pay for meals at restaurants, threatened local residents and drove recklessly.

Since moving to Berawa in 2013, Sabet became involved in controversy when he allegedly tried to "borrow" another man's wife. He reportedly also got involved in a fight with traditional Balinese security guards, or Pecalang.

Singapore Times suggests it was a visa violation that landed him into strife.

"Around 40 police and immigration officials came to arrest the 49-year-old after discovering that his tourist visa had run out in September.

But as they arrived at his residence in Canggu, a village popular with foreign tourists, Sabet emerged brandishing a knife.

"One of our officers tried to approach him and calm him down, but Sabet stabbed him," said Mr Wiyanto, adding that the officer died from his wounds."

without a doubt, will there be charges brought against the shooter?

If he hadn't stabbed/killed a policeman, my sympathy (mild sympathy mind) would be with him.. as he was clearly out of action/executed with that last shot to the head.

However, no (or very little) sympathy from me, as I said, he'd already killed a policeman, so doesn't deserve mercy.
