    Another million CCTVs for Bangkok

One million more closed-circuit television (CCTV) cameras will be installed all over the capital city to improve public safety, Metropolitan Police Bureau chief Kamronwit Thoopkrachang said on Thursday.

Pol Lt-Gen Kamronwit said this would be carried out under the "Miracle Eyes" project aimed at using security cameras for crime prevention and suppression.

It will be a joint operation by the Metropolitan Police Bureau and TOT Corporation.

Pol Lt-Gen Kamronwit and Monchai Noosong, acting manager of TOT, on Thursday signed a cooperation agreement in a ceremony at the Metropolitan Police headquarters.

The city police chief said the project is aimed at boosting safety for the people. Footage of surveillance cameras can help prevent crimes and facilitate police investigation of crimes.

They can also help police reduce accidents.

The security cameras will be set up at important government installations such as Government House, parliament, residences of important persons, business establishments and in residential areas.

They will be connected to the CCTV control centre at the Metropolitan Police headquarters and at 88 city police stations, Pol Lt-Col Kamronwit said.
"Slavery is the daughter of darkness; an ignorant people is the blind instrument of its own destruction; ambition and intrigue take advantage of the credulity and inexperience of men who have no political, economic or civil knowledge. They mistake pure illusion for reality, license for freedom, treason for patriotism, vengeance for justice."-Simón Bolívar

    Lovely.

    1 million * 10,000 baht per camera

Then multiply that by about 5 to allow for installation, maintenance, monitoring systems at each police station, servers, support personnel, backups, spares, etc.

    Lovely little earner for TOT.

If they're going to be mounted on the poles above the electric wiring, no hope of clear vision to the ground.

Looks like a good little earner in the making.

Yeah, good one - tossers. How about a decent traffic management system and at least a few pedestrian crossings first. It's like a toddler buying a pair of hiking boots.

All of them with that Thai programming feature that screens out expensive cars and rich Thais, I presume.

^I once asked a Filipino Army General why they kept on buying more and more new weapons, instead of repairing the thousands they had on the scrap pile that could be cheaply and easily repaired. I think what I got could be best described as a look of pity, like when a teenager says something so stupid as to be unbelievable.

Yes, how exactly do they prevent crimes and reduce accidents? And will there be enough people to watch millions of hours of footage each day, or will those employed to do this find something better to do? Like eat noodles or pick noses.

Bangkok is roughly 1,600 sq km or something like that (so 1,600,000 sq metres). One million more cameras would be one camera for every 2 sq metres wouldn't it?

    1,600 sq km is actually 1,600,000,000 sq m (1 sq km = 1,000,000 sq m- it's 1000m x 1000m) so it would be one camera every 1600 sq m.

In terms of length, yes- sq km and sq m are units of area, however, not length.

But then that would mean 1,000,000 (cameras) x 1.6 sq km or one camera for each of the 1.6 MILLION square kilometres wouldn't it?

Having 1 person to monitor 10 cameras, would need 100,000 new workers.

Like everything that the government puts forth this is nothing but more bullshit.

Just another way to steal money.

    No- 1600 sq m is NOT equal to 1.6 sq km (1,000,000 sq m = 1 sq km- 1600 sq m is equivalent to an area 40m x 40m)- 1,600,000,000/1,000,000 = 1600.

    It ain't rocket science, Tom.
There he goes. One of God's own prototypes. A high-powered mutant of some kind never even considered for mass production. Too weird to live, and too rare to die.
