French Tourist Dies in Fire at Illegal Thai Hotel
BANGKOK April 9, 2012 (AP)

A French tourist has been killed in an overnight fire that engulfed an illegally operated budget hotel in one of the Thai capital's main tourist districts.

Police say the fire started at a bar on the ground floor of a three-story building in the city's Khao San Road neighborhood, an area popular with backpackers and budget travelers.

Five tourists escaped but a 27-year-old Frenchman was found burned to death.

Police Capt. Charnchai Changwang said Monday that the top floor of the building was occupied by an illegal guesthouse offering small rooms at cheap rates.

The hotel was not registered with authorities and not subject to safety inspections.

It's sad that someone dies, but you don't need a Phd in fire safety to realise these places are deathtraps.

People tend to abandon common sense when they visit Thailand, thinking it's some kind of harmonious Nirvana, when in fact it's a third world country will all the associated dangers.

The wailing and sorrow over the consequent butcher's bill /daily cull of these fools is quite tedious. Stupid is as stupid does.......

Caveat emptor is the only way to think of Thailand. I personally do not recommend it to families - Russian eloctrocutions being a good example of why, although driver and pedestrian safety are also major reasons.

If you must visit - and lots of people enjoy the country's "attractions" then staying in a flop hotel in Kao San road made out of plywood and plasterboard is very unwise. As would be walking blindfolded across Place de la Concorde to have lunch at the Crillon.

Good post, Sailing IT...it doesn't really matter who you are, or where you stay...a fire could break out in a five-star highrise, and the odds are 'uneasy' you'd get out unscathed in Thailand...

It is a bit tasteless, making light of the dead, but that does happen on here. I remember reading posts on here joking about some child falling to his death from a bridge.

It is the mod team's job to delete inappropriate posts, so don't blame Ned, it was quite funny I thought, but like you say if you are a relative and see that, it's not very nice. But as I say, there are 3 things the Mod Team can do

1, Stick it in Members or MKP, so outsiders can't see it
2, Delete the posts
3, Sit there sucking each other off
