There is nothing wrong with the treatment of Filipina's in HK, which is not to say there will not be some casual racism from the HK Chinese (when they are not excoriating us gwailo's). For a start, their minimum wages are around double those paid in stingy Singapore. They get one mandated day off per week, which may not impress a westerner but it certainly beats the ME countries, where they have no mandated holiday. The Central HK area (around the Mandarin) on Sundays resembles a massive bird cage, with Filpina's everywhere, chattering away. Some of the locals resented that, although I thought it was quite charming. I suppose it's a bit like the Red Shirts camped at Ratchprasong last year- some of the 'elitists' resent their vision being sullied by the hoi polloi when they're out fashionably shopping. Anyway, in spite of the storm in a teacup some years ago nothing changed, and the amah's still take over Central on Sundays, it's a peculiarly HK phenomenon.
