South Carolina Governor Mark Sanford on Wednesday admitted conducting a months-long affair with a woman in Argentina, but refused to answer questions about whether he would resign from office.
The conservative Republican governor from the southeastern US state made the admission at a press conference he had called to explain his mysterious disappearance over several days last week.
"So, the bottom line is this: I have been unfaithful to my wife," Sanford, 49, told a crush of reporters.






Sanford's admission comes in the wake of a similar revelation from another rising Republican star, Senator John Ensign of Nevada, who last Tuesday admitted cheating on his wife but did not resign his US Senate seat.


Sanford, once considered a potential Republican contender for the presidential nomination in 2012, said he would resign from his position as head of the Republican Governor's Association, but refused to say whether he would give up his post as South Carolina's top executive.


The press conference was called after days of speculation as to where Sanford spent up to seven days during which his staff, and even his wife, didn't know where he was.


Sanford's staff at first said he was hiking on the Appalachian Trail, but then retracted that statement, provoking a media frenzy that culminated in Wednesday's bizarre press conference.
The governor spent much of his opening remarks offering apologies before announcing his adultery.
Sanford said he had spent a week with a woman in Argentina with whom he had conducted a months-long affair that developed out of an initially "very innocent" eight-year friendship conducted mostly via email.
"It developed into something much more than that," Sanford admitted.
The governor, whose voice wavered as he brushed away tears, lamented the consequences of his affair.
"I hurt a lot of different folks. All I can say is that I apologise," he said.
South Carolina's largest newspaper, The State, on its website printed excerpts of what it says were romantic emails exchanged between Sanford and the woman, identified only as Maria.


"Please sleep soundly knowing that despite the best efforts of my head my heart cries out for you, your voice, your body, the touch of your lips, the touch of your finger tips and an even deeper connection to your soul," Sanford wrote, according to the paper.
".... You have a particular grace and calm that I adore. You have a level of sophistication that so fitting with your beauty. I could digress and say that you have the ability to give magnificent gentle kisses, or that I love your tan lines or that I love the curve of your hips, the erotic beauty of you holding yourself (or two magnificent parts of yourself) in the faded glow of the night's light - but hey, that would be going into sexual details ..."


One of Maria's emails to Sanford says: "How in the world this lightening (sic) strike snuck up on us I am still not quite sure. As I have said to you before I certainly had a special feeling about you from the first time we met..."


The scandal also raised concerns about the governor's previous travel.
The governor said on Wednesday he paid for his latest trip himself, and that it came five months after he first admitted his indiscretions to his wife and began attempting to reconcile with her.


"Oddly enough, I spent the last five days of my life crying in Argentina," Sanford said.


The affair is likely to deal a death-blow to Sanford's political future as a Republican candidate who had appealed to constituents with strong family values.

Kind of makes you wonder, irrespective of political leanings, what makes seemingly intelligent men do seemingly idiotic things like this . . . especially when they know that they are in such a high profile position.

Boggles the mind how many others are hiding something.

I do not see why anyone would care who is fucking who anyway.
Clinton was doing it at his desk in the top office in the country, but other than the novelty of the act it was no big deal either that I could see.

I agree with you on that. The hypocrisy angle is the one that fells these idiots. If you set yourself up to be the protector of family values and being all righteous and Christian . . . and you get caught with your willie in the cookie jar then it is a lot worse than if you don't purport to be soem conservative God-fearing Christian.
