GOP governor MIA...no he's hiking...no, he's at the airport. what's the real story?

i don't even know where to begin with this increasingly bizarre story.

the republican governor of south carolina recently disappeared for 5 days, and the explanation of his whereabouts is more than a bit perplexing. and about 24 hours ago his office released a statement that has only muddied the waters even more.

according to his office (which had no idea where he was at the time), the gov. went hiking...alone....on the appalachian trail. he didn't inform anyone in his family, or anyone on his staff, or the lieutenant governor, or even his security detail....he just left to go on a 4 day hike.
and keep in mind that this past weekend was father's day....but he didn't even tell his family where he was going.....or even that he was going somewhere.

strange? in the parlance of the gov. of alaska....'you betcha!'.

but it gets even more curious......his car was found at an airport in atlanta, and a federal agent witnessed him getting on a plane. FYI, that airport is over 80 miles from the start of the applachian trail.

of course there's more to this story, and i can't wait for it to come out.....because if their cover story is this bizarre, the truth must be amazing.

    1. for residents of SC, he's the "CEO" of the state. if there had been a crisis (natural disaster, prison riot, etc...) while he was MIA, nothing could have been done without his signature....which is why the lieutenant gov. is asking questions.

    2. for republicans, he is/was considered a possible presidential candidate in 2012

    3. for me, it's amusing.

perhaps an argentinian, teenage gay lover....

The whereabouts of South Carolina Gov. Mark Sanford this past week just became a bit more curious, as if they hadn’t already stirred quite a bit of chatter in his home state and beyond. Earlier this morning, Gina Smith, a reporter for The State newspaper in Columbia, S. C., acted on a tip and confronted the governor at the Atlanta airport as he deplaned from, uh, not the Appalachian Trail as his staff had finally disclosed on Monday night, but Buenos Aires.

In a short interview, he told Ms. Smith that he didn’t know why his staff said he was hiking, although he conceded that he had considered that activity as a way to take a break after a bruising legislative session ended last week.

“But I said ‘no’ I wanted to do something exotic,” Mr. Sanford told Ms. Smith. “… It’s a great city.”

The governor said he had been traveling alone. Ms. Smith said she asked him if he had been staying at a hotel, but he wouldn’t answer her question.

so sanford was cheating on his wife with some broad in argentina.

    S.C. Governor Admits Extramarital Affair - washingtonpost.com

    two things....

adultery is a crime in south carolina.
when sanford was a congressman, he spoke out loudly about clinton's infidelity and voted to impeach him

only a matter of time before he resigns.

So you have a sitting state Governor who goes AWOL to bonk some Bird from Argentina he met on the Internet. What is most astonishing here is not the infidelity aspect- it happens, but the dereliction of duty. What sort of disarray must the Republican party be in for this sort of thing to happen?

Had he given the assignation any thought, he should have created a cover story before he ran off. I would have said I was going on a mission to Argentina to increase Argentinian trade with SC. He would have gotten laid and had the whole trip paid for by SC taxpayers. His failure to do this makes me question his claim to be a Republican.

this, of course, is simply jet's pathetic default.....

libbie, libbie, libbie.....new york times....unions....libbie, libbie, libbie....bladdy feck.

when the truth is that even dems who step out on their wives are subject to the same media scrutiny as republicans.....john edwards and elliot spitzer are recent examples, and who can forget bill clinton.

but what makes the republican philanderers so much more interesting to look at in a car crash sort of way is that they market themselves as 'christian', and 'traditional' and 'family values' candidates and they spare few with their politics of demonization. when the fact is, they're just like everyone else...imperfect and not without sin.

    hypocrites, you say?

One of the few Republicans who overtly questioned whether Mr. Livingston should be sworn in as Speaker in January, as planned, was Representative Mark Sanford of South Carolina. He said that although Mr. Livingston did not break a vow under oath, he did break a vow to his wife.

Sanford didn't so much think Bill Clinton -- who did his foolin' around -- right here in the US of A, at the very helm of state -- should stay in office either.
"I think it would be much better for the country and for him personally (to resign)... I come from the business side," he told the Times, ala Sam Stein. "If you had a chairman or president in the business world facing these allegations, he'd be gone."

Here is a wiki link to Governor Sanford. I know it's Wiki, but it is convenient.

The American Conservative Union scored him at 92 out of 100.

I don't know how religious he is (Episcopalian) and I don't know if he has Neo-Con views. He served in Congress before being a Governor.

    back on topic.....

republicans are calling for sanford to step down.
Republicans issued sharp calls for the disgraced Sanford to step down — a move he indicated he was not considering. And at least one campaign donor was drafting a letter asking for his money back. One county GOP leader said the governor "talked about how our leaders have stepped away from our core values, and said one thing on the campaign trail or out in the public and did something different in the background."

Glenn McCall, a local representative to the Republican National Committee, said the GOP "can recover from this if we hold him accountable and the governor does the right thing and resigns for the sake of the party."

Sanford emerged briefly Thursday from his family's home on Sullivans Island, off the coast from Charleston, and rolled down the window of his car to talk. Asked if he planned to resign, he shook his head no.

Sanford also issued a statement promising to reimburse the state for an economic-development trip he took to Argentina last year that included time he spent with his mistress. State Commerce Department records indicate more than $8,000 was spent on airfare, lodging and meals, though Sanford did not say how much he will pay back.
