    Americans Are Happy

This thread intended for my good buddies AO and Milkmun. The only two who have taken me up on my wager that the Republicans will maintain control of the House and Senate this fall. And ... I realize the pundits are on your side.

    Americans Are Happy
    By Mark Noonan

    Interesting poll from Rasmussen:

Two-out-of-three Americans (68%) rate their own life as good or excellent. A Rasmussen Reports survey of 1,204 Adults conducted May 18, 2006 found that 22% rate their own life as fair while 9% say poor.
As per usual, I still hold that watching what people do rather than what they say is the proper rule of thumb - but with people buying houses, buying cars, going on vacation, I'd say we have a combination of do and say indicating happy people.
This is important for the political prospects - the Democrats, lacking any agenda supported by the American people, are counting entirely on discontent to raise them to political power this November; this poll, plus the actions of the people in their daily lives, do not indicate any strong discontent among the general population. Contented people tend to keep things as they are.

Did Bush Get A "Zarqawi Bounce?" And What Does That Mean?

    By Matt Margolis

Last week I came across a story that indicated that Bush's approval ratings experience a bump after the news of Zarqawi's death.
For one day at least, President Bush was more popular than he's been all year.
The president's lagging poll numbers got a swift boost from Thursday's news that U.S. warplanes had killed Abu Musab al-Zarqawi, the most wanted-terrorist in Iraq.
Polling done on Thursday for the IBD/TIPP Presidential Leadership Index gave Bush a 44.2 rating, up from 39.1 in the prior days of June and 38.9 in May. The last time the Index reached this level was in December, when it hit 44.3.
Bush received a similar bump after the capture of Saddam.
So what does this all mean? The obvious answer is that Bush's approval ratings are tied directly to the success--or more accurately, the perceived success--in Iraq. This ultimately means that the media plays a huge role in President Bush's approval ratings, because they are the ones who get to tell the story of what is happening in Iraq, and as we know, bad news is what makes the news, and therefore coverage of Iraq is mostly negative.
Despite the media's presentation of the war in Iraq, our successes there are undeniable, and 20-40 years in the future history will paint a different picture of George W. Bush's presidency than what many so-called "experts" today say about it. I believe that George W. Bush's presidency will be described in the history books as one of the most successful in our time. President Reagan's critics during the 1980's have already been proven wrong, and Bush's presidency, too, will find the history books kinder than the media's story of his presidency.

I think the D's will take the House and the Senate will remain (R).

But I haven't read up on this in a couple of weeks.

^ good story and so true. I think it's pretty clear that Bush approach has totally failed and only fools could see such failures as success, probably because they never experienced it themselves

Bush has the backbone to do "the right thing" even though he knows he'll be highly unpopular for doing so. In my book, that is what makes a good leader. Flipper couldn't have had the balls to be pres during these times of great upheaval...

^ Good to see you Spliff.

The concept of being "happy" is a bit strange and it's also a bit complicated.

    What's the point of this?

You are either happy or you're not.
    No.

When these studies are conducted, they first have to define what happiness is.

Then measure how a person may or may not be happy.

Simply filling out a questionairre or random sample doesn't mean a whole lot.

This whole concept is a nationalist joke (again).

What's different about the American political system is that the leader of a particular party is elected, but almost always is not in the party at the national level.

But this "outsider" is the leader of ths party.

Very different from the British system. I like the British system better.
