A new NBC4/NBC News/Marist poll finds Republican Ken Cuccinelli slipping further behind Democrat Terry McAuliffe, 46 to 38 percent in the race for Virginia governor among likely voters. That’s 3 points wider than McAuliffe’s 43 to 38 percent lead a month ago -- before the shutdown. Libertarian Robert Sarvis gets 9 percent.

This afternoon, the Cook Political Report changed their ratings on 14 races in the favor of Democratic Candidates.
The Cook Political Report writes: “Mostly as a result of the damage House Republicans sustained during the 16-day government shutdown, we are making changes to our ratings in 15 House seats, all but one in Democrats' direction. Democrats still have a very uphill climb to a majority, and it's doubtful they can sustain this month's momentum for another year. But Republicans' actions have energized Democratic fundraising and recruiting efforts and handed Democrats a potentially effective message.”
Yesterday, Stu Rothenberg of the Rothenberg Report wrote a piece titled “For GOP, the Damage is Undeniable.”
Rothenberg writes: “The political fallout from the confrontation is very real. Republicans got almost nothing out of the deal to re-open the government and raise the debt ceiling except, of course, that they lost another 10 percentage points in their favorable rating and looked less like an organized political party and more like a disorganized, confused rabble. Republican operatives are worried that the showdown will improve Democratic House recruiting considerably for 2014, and it could well damage GOP fundraising, both among small-dollar donors and the party’s bigger hitters.”
The Cook Report changed race ratings in each of these 14 races:
CA-31 Gary Miller (R) Toss Up to Lean D
CA-41 Mark Takano (D) Likely D to Solid D
CO-06 Mike Coffman (R) Lean R to Toss Up
FL-22 Lois Frankel (D) Likely D to Solid D
MI-03 Justin Amash (R) Solid R to Likely R
MI-07 Tim Walberg (R) Likely R to Lean R
MT-AL Steve Daines (R) Solid R to Likely R
NE-02 Lee Terry (R) Likely R to Lean R
NJ-02 Frank LoBiondo (R) Solid R to Likely R
NJ-03 Jon Runyan (R) Solid R to Likely R
NM-02 Steve Pearce (R) Solid R to Likely R
NY-23 Tom Reed (R) Likely R to Lean R
OH-06 Bill Johnson (R) Likely R to Lean R
PA-08 Mike Fitzpatrick (R) Likely R to Lean R

Keep your friends close and your enemies closer.
We see the level of discourse aboard here sunk to the level outlined below but now it's become nationwide:
Democratic Congressman Refers to Conservatives as "Domestic Enemies"
How 'bout that!
Establishment Democrats don’t regard Americans who believe in limited government as opponents, but as enemies. Don’t take my word for it. Listen to what they say when they are talking to each other. Congresscreep Steve Cohen (D-TN) on MSNBC:“We [meaning U.S. Representatives] take an oath to support the country against all enemies foreign and domestic, and these [Tea Party Republicans] are the domestic enemies.”
That's Fucked-Up, Man
A Deplorable Bitter Clinger
Well Booners, what would you call a minority in the government that forces a federal shutdown and holds the country hostage to the tune of some $24 billion dollars all in a vain and futile attempt to delay / defund a law that both House and Senate passed, President signed into law and Supreme Court ruled constitutional?
While domestic enemy sounds about right I prefer the term "American Taliban"

this is the 3rd poll. Suck it up Rethugs,..you own it
A new round of post-shutdown polling shows that Democrats not only have an opportunity to take back the House of Representatives next year, but that they could win a sizable majority if voter anger over the shutdown carries into 2014.

54 percent think it's bad that Republicans control the House, the poll found. That's up from 43 percent in December 2012, during the last fiscal standoff. The figure is the first time a majority thought Republican control was bad for the country since CNN started asking in December 2010.

Texas judge slams Republicans in video announcing he’s now a Democrat
A Texas judge puts the blame squarely on Tea Party Republican rhetoric for his decision to run for re-election as a Democrat in a campaign video he released on Sunday.
“Rational Republican beliefs have given way to ideological character assassination,” Bexar County Judge Carlo Key says in the video, over shots of Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX) and other Republican lawmakers. “Pragmatism and principle have been overtaken by pettiness and bigotry. Make no mistake, I have not left the Republican party. It left me.”
“I will not be a member of a party in which hate speech elevates candidates for higher office, rather than disqualifying them” Key says. “I cannot place my name on the ballot for a political party that is proud to destroy the lives of hundreds of thousands of federal workers over the vain attempt to repeal a law that will provide healthcare to millions of people throughout our country.”
The Austin Chronicle reported that Key’s video follows his appearance at an event for Democratic gubernatorial candidate Wendy Davis.
“I’m proud to welcome Carlo today,” state Democratic Party chair Gilberto Hinojosa said in a statement on Sunday. “Our party – the Texas Democratic Party – welcomes anyone ready to fight for a better future for all Texans.”

How true. I wonder how many long term republican voters are just hanging on through habit, much as one clings to ones favorite football team when they go thru' a bad patch? In this case though, it isn't just a bad patch- the teams been sold, and moved to a different place somewhere down south.Originally Posted by S Landreth

You know the GOP is in BIG TROUBLE when even Bill O'Reilly takes them to task:
Bill O'Reilly: Republicans Will Lose In 2014, 2016 If They Don't 'Solve Problems'
"The Republican Party finds itself in trouble -- big trouble. Obamacare is not going to be defunded, and the GOP will have to make a deal with the president. And you know who's most happy about this? Hillary Clinton, that's who. Hard-right Americans should understand that Democrats will win next year's midterm elections and the presidency of 2016 if the Republican party does not begin to solve problems."

GOP Official Resigns After Saying Purpose Of Voter ID Is To Suppress Votes Of Democrats, 'Lazy Blacks'
Until Thursday, Don Yelton was a precinct chair in the Buncombe County, North Carolina Republican Party. That ended after a Daily Show interview riddled with racism and candid admissions about the purpose of a voter suppression bill enacted by Republican lawmakers in his state. Over the course of the interview Yelton admitted that he supports requiring voters to show ID, in addition to the other, many voter suppression provisions included in the North Carolina law, because “the law is going to kick the Democrats in the butt.” He also denied that the law is racist during the course of an interview where he both used a particular racial slur that begins with the letter “n” and claimed that he is not racist because he “one my best friends is black.” Watch it:
It’s getting down to the wire in Virginia so I went to check on polling data and saw a poll that was just released today.
Democrat Terry McAuliffe is 7 points ahead of Republican Ken Cuccinelli for the Governor’s race there.

Lowell Weicker served three terms in the U.S. Senate from Connecticut as a Republican, before being defeated by then-Democrat Joe Lieberman – with an assist from influential conservatives – in 1988. Two years later, in a rare feat, he won Connecticut’s gubernatorial election as a third-party candidate.
What went down in D.C. over the past month – has it told us anything about the Republican Party that we didn’t know?
I suppose the obvious answer is that the party is so far off to the right that it can’t even come to grips with reality in America today. Now, that’s the easy answer because it’s clear that the Republicans, through their most extreme members, are showing that tendency.
... The Republican Party started to purge its moderates … starting in about ‘86. I was part of that purge in ‘88 when I lost as senator. Now you’re left with the religious right and the rural votes — and that’s it.
If you were running for office again, would it be as a Republican?
Oh, I don’t think so. I think that if the Republican Party stays as it is now, I would still run as an independent, as I did when I ran for governor. The problem would be that if I ran as a Republican, then I’d be subject to Republican primaries and Republican conventions. Anybody that runs has to kowtow so far to the right that they become unelectable come election time.
Who should be paying more in taxes now, if anyone?
You should have a progressive income tax where the wealthy pay more, and you should certainly have corporate taxes that are commensurate with what that community demands of government. So I stand where everybody stood when the income tax was first devised in the United States, which was it was to be a progressive situation, in order to go ahead and protect the poorest of our people.
... So what do you think is the way forward for the Republican Party?
I think it has to become involved with social issues … Where I have my problem is on all the various social issues, mainly those that address women and minorities, gay people — I mean, I go right down the list — there’s a total disconnect on those issues between reality and the Republican Party. And until they reform in that area, they’re not gonna win anything. And I think one-party government is horrible. So it’s essential both at the state and national level that the Republicans pull back and make themselves relevant to the important social issues of the day.
... Given what you’re saying, how prevalent do you think sexism or racism are within the Republican Party?
Oh, I think it clearly shows. I mean I don’t know what the percentages are, but it seems to me when I hear Republicans talking, I hear a lot of sexism, I hear a lot of racism …
Barry Goldwater was a very good friend of mine. And Barry Goldwater told me this was back in nineteen-ninety-whatever-it-was: He said, “Gosh, I’d be considered a liberal right now by the Republican Party.” That’s the direction the party has gone, and has been going for a long time. And it will continue to go that way until moderate people stand up.

Next week, Virginia will have a Democratic governor
Democrat Terry McAuliffe has opened a double-digit lead over Republican Ken Cuccinelli II in the race for Virginia governor, in a new poll capturing increasing dissatisfaction among voters with Cuccinelli’s party and his conservative views.
According to a new Washington Post/Abt SRBI poll, McAuliffe tops Cuccinelli 51 percent to 39 percent among likely voters in the Nov. 5 election. McAuliffe led by eight percentage points in a poll taken last month. Libertarian Robert Sarvis, who has capitalized on voter unrest with the two major-party candidates, is at 8 percent, according to the new poll.
The margin between the two major-party candidates is driven by a huge gender gap. Among men, the two candidates are running even, with Cuccinelli at 45 percent and McAuliffe at 44 percent. But among women, Cuccinelli trails by 24 points — 58 percent to 34 percent.
Bad news for the GOP: 'Obamacare' now more popular than the Republican party
The bad news for the Republican party keeps rolling in. Two new polls show that not only is the Republican party in bad standing with the American people, but their number one target, "Obamacare," is actually becoming more popular than they are.
A CNN/ORC International survey and a Washington Post-ABC News poll were both released this week giving great insight into how the American people view the government, both political parties and who they blame for the recent government shutdown. According to the CNN/ORC International survey, 54 percent of the American people think it's a bad thing that Republicans are in control of the House of Representatives, which is an 11 point increase from last December. Of the people who support Republicans leading the House, only 38 percent think it's a good idea, representing a 13-point drop from the end of 2012. Digging deeper into the House of Representatives, over 60 percent of those polled think House Speaker John Boehner (R) should be removed from that role, with only 30 percent standing by the Speaker to remain in position.
President Obama's approval numbers have remained lower than he would like, but are still in better shape than congressional Republicans, The CNN/ORC poll has the president's approval rating at 44 percent, but other polls, such as the right-wing leaning Rasmussen, poll his approval at 51 percent as early as last week. While the President Obama's numbers are low, he is still stronger in the eyes of Americans than his Republican counter parts. The poll shows that 44 percent have more confidence in President Obama, with only 31 percent showing more confidence in congressional Republicans.
The Washington Post-ABC News poll also shows problems for both parties, with Republicans taking the hardest hit. Following the shutdown, Democrats have had to deal with backlash as well. A record 49 percent of those polled disapprove of how Democrats handled the budget negotiations. Republicans took it on chin however, with 63 percent saying they have an unfavorable opinion of the party and only 32 percent giving them a favorable review. What makes matters worse for Republicans is that 40 percent have a "strongly unfavorable" view of the party.
What throws salt on an already wide open wound is that the Affordable Care Act, despite numerous computer glitches, is actually gaining in popularity. The new CNN poll shows that while "Obamacare" is still more unpopular than popular in the eyes of the American people, the trend line is starting to change. Just over 40 percent favor the new health care law, while 56 percent are opposed to it. The poll does dig deeper and shows an interesting statistic."Of those opposed, 38% say they are against the law because they think it's too liberal and 12% say it's not liberal enough. That means that 53% either support Obamacare, or say it's not liberal enough."Normal rhetoric promotes the idea that the American people are against "Obamacare" because it's a "government takeover" of the health care industry, but that is not the case. If you add the supporters of the Affordable Care Act to those who want the program to be even more liberal, the majority of the country would be in favor.
With the 2014 mid term elections only a year away, the Republican party must change their image and brand if they plan to repeat the success of the 2010 midterms when the Tea Party wave swept into Washington. If the party continues on its current trajectory, the Republican party will continue to fall into disarray.

New Poll Shows Democratic Incumbents in Big Trouble'
The poll was actually from James Carville and Stan Greenberg's Democracy Corps and was titled "The Revolt Against Washington and the Republican Congress."
"In Democratic districts, net incumbent approval has plummeted by 11 points, from +8 approval to +3 disapproval. In Republican districts, incumbent approval has gone down only 4 points. You see the same results when they ask a question about warmth of feeling toward incumbents: It's down 7 points in Republican districts and 9 points in Democratic districts. This isn't good news for Democrats. It's true that attitudes toward the Republican Party have taken a bigger hit than attitudes toward the Democratic Party, but attitudes toward actual incumbents are exactly the opposite. And in elections, that's what matters."

Seems to becoming a fad as of late
Yesterday, a North Carolina Republican congressional candidate switched his party affiliation to Democrat, saying that he “refuse[s] to be part of an extremist movement in the GOP that only appears to thrive on fear and hate mongering of anyone and everyone who doesn’t walk their line.”
In a statement posted on his website, Jason Thigpen criticized the establishment candidate, Walter Jones, saying “[t]he GOP leadership has such little regard and faith in the more than 1 Million people whom live in NC’s 3rd Congressional District that they don’t believe even one of us are good enough to represent OUR District. So they sent a lobbyist who’s lived in Washington, D.C. for the last 15 or more years. What an insult.”
Earlier this year, Thigpen attacked the strict new North Carolina voting law, writing that “[y]ou can paint a turd and sell it as art, but it’s still a turd.”
Thigpen is a six-year Army veteran and, according to his website, a recipient of the Purple Heart. “I didn’t go to war to defend the liberties and freedoms of one party, race, sex, or one income class of Americans,” he writes of the Republican attempt to suppress the vote.
“So, to come home from serving our country and see North Carolina legislators using their super-majority status to gerrymander districts and pass a law to deliberately suppress and oppress the voting rights of Democrats but more specifically minorities and college students, is absolutely deplorable.”
Thigpen is challenging Walter Jones in the 3rd Congressional District. Jones, a Republican, is also facing a far-right challenger with Tea Party affiliations.
North Carolina Republican switches party affiliation: ‘I guess being American just isn’t good enough’ for the GOP anymore
Once the word filters down to the LIV's (Low Information Voters) that the Democrats voted unanimously for the rule that led to insurance cancellations we might, just might see a sea change in Congress:
CNN reports that in September of 2010, in an attempt to let people keep their insurance plans, Senate Republicans tried to block the grandfather rule that is currently resulting in millions of Americans having their insurance policies cancelled. Democrats, including many who are facing re-election next year, unanimously voted to support the rule. The result, as we have seen, is two million already losing the insurance plan Obama repeatedly promised they could keep.
In its report, CNN points out that the whole point of the GOP efforts was to protect millions from losing their insurance. So what we have here is yet more proof that the GOP has been warning for years about this avoidable catastrophe, while the media and Democrats covered their ears and screamed happy talk."

Quite enjoyed watching Martin Bashir annihilate Ted Cruz and the Tea Party Congress in this clip-
Ted Cruz Gets ANNIHILATED By Martin Bashir
neo-republican approach to 'winning' or retaining seats- gerrymandering, and making it harder for people to vote. Also disinformation campaigns (eg 'swiftboating') and push polling.
neo-republican approach to democratic 'governance'- serial fillibustering, blocking judicial and government appointments, and either shutting down &/or sequestering government- or threatening to do so.
Is it any wonder they are so unpopular? They may still call themselves the party of business, but they are certainly not the party of investment- they have pretty much poisoned a generation of americans against them. Not to mention the rest of the world- where else but Israel might you hear much good about the (once) GOP these days? They are thoroughly disliked, and that is pretty much universal.
No amount of mainly southern & rural good ole' white boys crying into their blogs will change that. Neither do they seem inclined to change- bunker mentality runs deep among these people, the more marginalised they become the louder and more obstructive they also become- thus reinforcing their suicidal trend. I think only time, changing demographics and a new (and decidedly different) generation of leadership will save the thuglicans now.
More important, of course, is what will save America now? Neither of the two parties are willing to meaningfully address the trend that is incrementally destroying the economy- and if unaddressed, that means ultimately the nation. Inequality, and the hollowing out of the middle class and it's purchasing power are on one hand a GOP policy, but on the other hand GOP obstructionism is a Democrat excuse for inaction. And of course, both parties feed at the same trough anyway.
Just a reminder- Republican stupidity, unpopularity and serial obstructionism is no excuse for Democrat complacency and inaction. Both parties are failing their nation and the people they officially work for. Both parties are unpopular also- just the thuglicans are more so. Both parties deserve to be.

However the perceived notion that the GOP is in dire straights, the facts of the matter are it's gonna get better for them in the future. Especially as the even the LIV's realize it were them damn Democrats who were responsible for them to lose their Insurance.

^ Well said.
Robert Reich identified some of the challenges facing progressive Democrats in this recent op/ed:
If you're a progressive or Democrat, or both, it's tempting to look at the Republican civil war -- the increasingly bitter struggle between the Tea Partiers and the GOP establishment -- with some satisfaction. The war is hurting their chances in 2014 and probably even 2016. But at least the Tea Party right is giving establishment Republicans in board rooms and on Wall Street a reason to worry, and offering rank-and-file Republicans a real choice.
Establishment Democrats, on the other hand, couldn't care less about the progressive left, which has been so submissive and quiet for so long its concerns are summarily dismissed.
What about single-payer or even public option? Resurrect Glass-Steagall and limit size of big banks? Exempt first $15K from Social Security tax and remove cap on income subject to it? A living wage? A carbon tax? Trade agreements with strict labor and environmental standards? Make it easy to form labor unions? Universal child care? Better schools? Free higher education? Paid family and medical leave? A new WPA for the long-term unemployed? Pay for all this by cutting military spending, eliminating corporate welfare, and raising taxes on rich to rate they were before 1981. Reverse "Citizen's United" and get big money out of politics. Reverse the savage inequality of income and wealth in America.
Hello? The Democratic establishment, chock full of corporate and Wall Street executives, won't hear of any of this. I'm not advocating a civil war in the Democratic Party, but isn't it time progressives gave establishment Democrats a reason to worry, and offered rank-and-file Democrats a real choice?
