Why was Bin laden never caught?

It did not take long to catch Saddam Hussein.
But Bin laden seems to be a ghost in the wind.

Only 2 reasons I can think of:

    1. He is dead

    2. We're (i.e. US present gov) not to keen to catch him

How would have he been able to release a tape threatening the US before the last US elections if we had caught him?

I think the next one will come in November...

    Great OP, bluecat.

I cannot offer proof, but I do think the US called off some special ops from going after OBL.

It's better for the US government to have OBL out there, alive, or perceived as alive.

In this way, the Neo-cons can more easily promote and implement their agenda.

They don't want to catch him - it's better to let the bogeyman scare people into doing as they are told.

I dont know how true this is, but, dont is family have a lot of financial interests in the west? If he were to be caught and said family pull the plug, where would it leave the companies affected (financially speaking). Perhaps the power brokers have put pressure on governments not to find him.

Im pretty sure they know exactly where he is and what he had for breakfast this morning.

Well, it said that the only flight that was allowed to leave the US after 9/11 was the one carrying Bin Laden's family.
    Not true, of course...

The red team have him in a holding cell. Towards the end of October they will announce that John McCain caught him single handedly and that Binny boy was later shot attempting to escape. Thus wooing the American electorate and locking up the White House for the red team for another four years.

i guess equally that if they found him then they may have to scale down the war on terror. This would obviously have massive impacts on a number of the dodgy laws they are all passing through telling us it is for the greater good.
Plus if you look at how much extra money the uk government is making from fuel now that the price is high a bit of security stability may affect that.

Indeed, specifically with the Bush family oil business in the US.

But the Bin Ladens disowned Osama and have broken all ties with him, apparently.

It is true that the Bin Laden family was assisted in leaving the US. The FBI claims they were satisfied that none of them had any relevant knowledge.

I would not add things up hastily without further evidence, but it all is rather 'strange'.

Bin Laden sounds like a TD poster.

Claims to hate the US, but half his family is living there ...

At least he is not one of those who have left the US for greener pastures but need to wave the flag in every thread they post in.

    I don't see any flags.

The Bin Laden family is huge. He has several wives and untold number of children and grandchildren. One of them appeared partially nude in a fashion magazine a few years back. Ugly as sin.

At the start of offensive action in Afghanistan CIA special ops called in air strikes on fleeing Taliban groups. They were not followed up on. Rumsfeld would not authorize any missions until command of operations was switched from the CIA to the Pentagon.

bin Laden doesn't know it but he is a double agent.

Bush can't kill his buddy's son. It's as simple as that. That's why McCain is so sure he can do it.

bin laden was/is wealthy and very well resourced, intelligent/clever, had time to prepare to go underground, has committed followers and fellow believers that provide him support and he has been lucky.

to the extent one can separate out the emotion (horror/indignation/fear/anger) some of his acts have caused, his story is an interesting one. whether seen as a pariah or hero, the fact that he remains alive is amazing.

what historical figure can compare to him? very unique person in human history.
