Modern PC parenting might be a contributary factor. When I was a kid, if I acted a twat my old man twatted me, seemed to work OK.

In Europe they seem to have narrowed it down to certain food colouring.

When I lived in UK our neighbours kid was affected - grasshopper mind and hyperactive .
Doctor advised - no highly coloured food - mainly drinks and M&M's (Smarties)that were yellow- blue or violent green. Something to do with the artificial - but legal- dyes used .
It worked - he calmed down within a week or so .
It was proved when my lad who was the same age - about 7 - shared some of his Smarties with him - he went apeshit for a couple of days !

The point is - how many kids do you see when they come out of school on the back of their mums motorbike with a cup of some gross yellow/green / blue drink ??? Hmmmmm could be a start !

    Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder

They should really call it a syndrome since the science has been a bit lazy in this area and they've yet to nail down a physiological or substance-based cause for this "disorder."

If I give my son something sugary, including fruit juice, he gets more hyper, of course. It's worse with junk food.

But kids are kids. I don't think they should be over-medicated just because school teachers can't handle them.

    Or don't understand them.

Very good points. What's interesting is that this so-called "disorder' is much more prevalent in boys than girls. Someone observed that boys rarely have an attention deficit problem when they are playing football after school. They all of a sudden become very focused. When they're glued to desks for 6 hours learning grammar and algebra this disorder suddenly appears. I'm also guessing that almost every creative genius in history showed signs of this "disorder".

^ Agreed, the sudden epidemic says more about schools, society and the drugs industry than it does about children, imho.

was along my thoughts also, although i reckon diet [processed food] plays a major factor,30-40 years ago we at a lot more home grown meals as i stated earlier i don,t recall kids misbehaviour, perhaps the bleeding hearts intervention of not correcting childrens behaviour also leads the kids just running amok, they are set no boundaries..i,m just glad i have finished my parenting phase of life! now its all about me
