it seems to me that homophobia is quite prevalent in society ---of course this is the case in some more than others.
IMO homosexuality is considered tolerable by thai society, but not really accepted. most thai homosexuals don't have to fear being beaten or killed simply for being gay, but it seems to me that they are not taken seriously by society at large simply because of their sexual preference....and i believe that this is a form of homophobia.
and in some western societies, gays aren't allowed to marry or have legal protection against discrimination. "jokes" on TV, radio routinely demonize homosexuality, and in some cases entire careers are founded on this type of "entertainment".
and even on this forum, homophobic slurs are frequently used in an attempt to silent dissenting opinion. granted the posters who resort to this type of behavior aren't credible, but these types of posts are common all the same. in fact, it is often used as an accusation. i have little doubt that the usual suspects will soon be replying to this thread in their usual "style", but IMO to respond to directly to these posts only adds credence to the slur. by replying directly to a claim of this kind, one is acknowledging that there is something wrong about homosexuality.
so, i'd be interested to read your thoughts on the topic....
