A notable part if south carolinas history is the enthusiasm for white the confederate waving citizens has for lynching black people for doing things that would not get a white person lynched.

hence the reference to the cultural importance south Carolina of a black man hanging from a tree.

Are you not yet fed up with this slavery and racism crap? A worker in Manchester or Liverpool in 1850 had the freedom to slog away 80 hours per week, and lived to the ripe old age of 25. A slave in America at the same time, 35, and God knows how long they made it in the Cannibal infested swamps of Africa. The Confederation had its fair share of free blacks, many of whom were slaveholders themselves. The American dream was shared by them as well, maybe easier to achieve than it is today by so called free people. Amazon's sales of Confederate flags have skyrocketed by more than 3,000% in the past 24 hours.

People are snatching up the flags online after several major retailers — including eBay, Wal-Mart, and Sears — pulled them from shelves.

The retailers banned the flags after last week's shooting in Charleston, South Carolina, in which a gunman killed nine people in the historic black Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church.

The man arrested in connection to the shootings, 21-year-old Dylann Roof, reportedly harbored racist sentiments and wanted to incite a "race war." He appeared to pose with the Confederate battle flag in several photos that were unearthed after the attack."

I went into a shipyard offices in Pascagoola Mississippi back in 72 on assignment. The place was one huge Butler type building. Across its rear wall was a Confederate flag of Mississippi that had to be 20' x 30'. I was stunned.

We flew in and out of Mobile Alabama during that time. I was also shocked to find white only bathrooms, drinking fountains and restaurants.

As someone who had never experienced this form of segregation before it came as a shock to me. When I discussed this with family and friends on return to California they to were disbelieving that such things actually existed. I asked my employer about this condition. Their response was, "that's the way it is." The company also sent black employees to their Mississippi site. I asked one of them Irving, what he thought about it. Irving said he grew up in Oklahoma on a share croppers farm. He said he was not going to rock the boat on his income. Further he stated he now owned the farm where his father and family were share croppers.

Irving went on to become a very successful Black business man.
