California has now moved up its presidential primary to Feb. 5, raising the prospect that as many as 20 other states -- including giants like Florida, Illinois, New York, and Texas -- will hold their nominating contests on this date. We're calling it Tsunami Tuesday. So which candidates will Tsunami Tuesday end up benefiting? What will it all mean? A few notes on the impact in California:

The article below says that the California primary is scheduled for March. -- the article above says CA is on Feb. 5 -- (I'll check it) -- Tsunami Tuesday is on Feb. 5, a "few days after" Iowa and New Hampshire.

A Tuesday in February
February 5, a.k.a. "Tsunami Tuesday," is not just going to be anchored by California’s primary. Other big states, like New York, New Jersey, Illinois and possibly Texas, are going to be on the same day.

This guarantees that California will get no more attention than it gets in any other cycle.

Not necessarily.

In fact, arguably because of the cost of talking to California voters, it may get even less since there are so many other states one can concentrate on.


From my perspective, all this frontloading has done only one thing: make Iowa even more important.



As the very first test, the "winner(s)" of the Iowa Caucuses is (are) going to take on greater significance than ever before – particularly since there is no break between Iowa and everything else. Momentum will be the driving force for these candidates post-Iowa, not money or message.
The only chance Iowa and (to a lesser extent) New Hampshire have in becoming less relevant to the process this year is if the two states move up so early that there are a few weeks, rather than just a few days, between them and every other state.

Arizona moving up

AP: Arizona Moves Primary Up to Feb. 5

By PAUL DAVENPORT PHOENIX (AP) - Gov. Janet Napolitano has decided to move up Arizona's presidential primary by three weeks to Feb. 5, joining at least 19 other states with primaries or caucuses on that date.
Napolitano will invoke her authority under state law and move the primary from Feb. 26, aides told The Associated Press on Tuesday.

The governor chose the new date because it provides the earliest chance for Arizona to have its primary without breaking national political party rules, said Noah Kroloff, deputy chief of staff for policy. Other states with primaries the same day include California, Illinois, New Jersey and New York.

OK, this thread was started 8 months, ago, and now the big dance is 4 weeks away.

As I said, these early caucuses and primaries will set some foundatin, but February 5th may set the race.

Any predictions? Bets?

I don't think corporate America will let Obama win.

Corporate America has definitely bought Hillary, Romney and Giuliani. Whores all three of them. Faux populists Huckabee, Thompson, McCain and Obama haven't suggested anything very radical, so I think corporate America is only slightly nervous about them. Edwards is perhaps the most vocal opponent of corporate America, so it's hard to imagine that they would let him win even if he made a big comeback. Corporate America is disturbed that people like Ron Paul are even allowed to spread their message over the airwaves. In televised debates, he is rarely asked any questions. They would find a way to squash him like a bug if he ever got close to power.

Tomorrow morning when we get up, we'll get results for many, but not all states.

The Demos give out their delegates by the percentage of the vote won in a particular state: if a (D) candidate wins 40% of the vote, they get forty percent of the delegates.

The Republicans have a winner take all, program.

So for the (Rs), the big delegate states like CA, NY, and others will be more of a factor.

Anyone got any predictions or hunches, they wanna drop?
