In my day that was called the "Draft." Met a young Thai kid, 19 years old who was on his so called "Gap Year," as he just completed his studies at the British International School. I asked him what he was going to do? Nothing, just travel a bit on Mom and Dad.

I had a laugh inside. My "Gap Year," was spent in Vietnam chasing Charlie. Quite a difference in perspectives.

How can anyone possibly defend this ?
As said the maximum benefit you should receive is just below the minimum wage so taking a job always makes you better off than not working.
sadly the lefty, communist labour and Lib Dem parties won't condone such action as that is their voter base.
they tried to make the workshy scroungers do two weeks work experience and it was challenged by some spotty little Oick who refused to get a proper job as being against her precious human rights. As usual the Government capitulated so if they can't get them to do two weeks work how do they expect them to get them to work full time ?
26,000 clear a year is to my way of thinking a huge incentive to sit on your arse all day
Too bad I couldn't figure out how to get that and live in Thailand. I would be living comfortably! Sadly I have worked continuously since I was 15 only ending up still relatively poor and burnt out at 39. I said "fuck that" and left. Let the other schmucks work their asses off to pay for the slackers I am done.
Yeah BB69 One guy in my area in his early 40s said the same as you , he had a nice house back there and sold it for a pretty penny and says he's enough to live on till he's about 110! , my Sons 47 and he's selling up in 3 years time and coming here cos he's had a belly full too.
I only wish I had some valuable assets that I could have turned a quick profit on but I wasn't that lucky. Just a couple of used cars and some collectibles I sold on EBAY. In a way it was good because I didn't have anything to keep me from just leaving either.
I'm not saying it was Aliens, but it was Aliens!

I was actually thinking more along the line of civilian work vice military.

I don't watch NBA or NFL so don't care about the next generation of spoiled prima donnas.

One reason the major 3rd World countries like China, India and Brazil will become economic superpowers is that they do not fund Welfare States as we 'civilised societies do, so they do not need to throw a significant portion of their GDP into that unsustainable black hole.

Quite aside from the adverse implications for a society happily breeding a race of parasites latched onto the Nanny's nipples.

Fair enough to help support those who are genuinely disabled or otherwise unable to work or find work, but a fair and reasonable message for the career idlers should be to work or starve. Unfortunately there's little sense left in a world coaxed along by the bleeding hearts, where everyone is a victim except the real victims, those who in return for an honest day's work are bled dry to feed the loafers. Oh yes, and forced sterilisation for the scum that exist simply to produce babies for the rest of us to feed, clothe, house and educate just enough to follow in their parent's footsteps.

    Fire away...!

I don't agree with you about anything really (as you well know ), but I bow my head and raise my hat to you on that good sir.

42 years is indeed a wonderful thing, and it is truly saddening to read that you and your late wife didn't have the opportunity to realise your plans together.

To address your OP: as the libbiest liberal who has ever libbed a progressive lib I find it incomprehensible that people on the dole should not perform some sort of community service as they seek employment.

    Want your dole cheque?
OK, Here's a stick and a rubbish bag, go and clean up a couple of hundred square yards of the local park and get back to us.
Oh, you are educated? Well then head down to the public library (if it is still open!) and help the librarians with their re-sorting project.
What's that? You are an obese single mother of 8 with no intention of ever seeking gainful employment? Here's a begging bowl and a map to the bus station. Good luck.

How do they pay rent, and buy gasoline for their cars? Food?

I think volunteering should be for those who choose to volunteer.

Ref my earlier post, I found this BBC article from 2005

BBC NEWS | Europe | German benefit protests contained

Unemployed Germans have been encouraged to take "one-euro jobs" - wages of one to two euros per hour on top of jobless benefit for public service work, such as helping in nursing homes or rubbish collection.
UK way behind the Germans...as usual....

Cheers for the compliment QC ,just because we are politically different does not mean we are different in our outlook on certain aspects of life, actually it was 47 years together as we starting courting when we was 14!, I told every one in the School I was going to marry Moreen (spelled correctly) I often said hey if you found a diamond would you throw it away In 2007 I had to go back to the UK to sort some business out, and of course I went to her grave, it was a bit too much for me ,and as I stood there tears streaming down my face talking to her headstone an old gentleman stopped to look at me ,I gathered myself and said I suppose you think I'm crazy eh, he just smiled and said no not at all, in fact I have come to have a good talk to my wife who is in a grave not 30 yards away from your wife's

Judging by the 2 pics of one of the sons they look like a fine addition to the neighborhood. Fucking disgrace.

Where I grew up it was Cambodian refugees during the Khmer Rouge. Family of 10 or so would get a free house, car, jobs, govt aid, etc then all the young soulless killers (aka teenage boys) would form a gang and start killing locals and stealing shit. We only had local neighborhood gangs that would just fight and screw around but the Cambodian's moved it to the next level. They wouldn't fight they would just shoot or stab you to death. Everyone quickly learned not to fuck with the Cambo's.

This looks like a similar story.

"Abdi Nur, 42, an unemployed bus conductor, his wife Sayruq, 40, and their seven children moved to the three-storey home in the fashionable area of the capital after complaining that their previous home had been in a 'poor' part of the city."

Don't tell me, he quit his job to "spend more time with his family"

When I am asked to state my nationality on a form these days I cringe at what people are going to think when I write "British".

It's a good idea but it would be a great idea if it was taken further. If the state is paying people to work full time on these kinds of tasks, it should employ them properly. Give them a full time job working for the council. It would have the added benefits of cutting down the employment levels. Win-win situation.

Bill Clinton signed the Welfare to Work Program in 1996 where able bodied slackers had to seek employment or take job training to qualify for benefits. the program was working really well for years with people getting off the welfare roles. Most jobs were in government but that's ok since it restored some pride in the people who had a job for the first time in their life, then along came Obama who cut out the requirement to try get a job to qualify for welfare

The problem with these forced labour schemes is that people who do not want to do the job can be disruptive, in the hope they will get fired. The only solution really is to ensure the maximum level of benefits is less than the minimum wage so that claiming them is no longer an attractive option. Suddenly cleaning lavatories becomes preferable to claiming benefits because it pays more.

This time Piwanoi I want repo.

Yeah, that is totally untrue right wing blogosphere bullshit.

Some Republican state governors requested that they could change the requirements and the admin gave them the freedom to do it.
