The Australian government is rather cynical about the true neediness of these 'boat refugees', although you can be sure that there is much debate about the policy within Australia. We do not push them back out to sea incidentally- we house them in nauru, christmas island or PNG, at our own expense, while their applications for asylum are processed. We consider these boat people to be queue jumpers, basically, and put them back in line as it were. We have no such cynicism about Syrian refugees, who are not arriving via well paid people smugglers in rickety boats, and we have already accepted a number. More to the point, we on the other side of the world are providing aid money, as is the USA, UK, Germany, Saudi Arabia etc. Israel should too, and I hope it is doing so.
