i disagreed with mccain on practically every policy issue i can think of (except campaign finance reform), and posted more than a few uncharitable comments about him here during his presidential run in 2008, but for trump do act as he has over the few years is beyond the pale. not solely for the words that he said/tweeted but also because it's not befitting the office of the presidency.

A man with principles and honour. Pity you can't say that about many of his Republican colleagues in the Senate.

Same here. Especially his opposition to the Iran nuclear deal. He was a straight up neocon to the bone. He did the right thing but got blamed for the defeat of the ACA repeal which Drumpf bungled bigly.

He will be remembered as a man with honor and dignity in contrast to asset Trump who will go down in history as a disgrace and a failure.

Never saw me hurl insults at the man. Until he made the fatal political mistake of choosing air head Sarah for his running mate to appease the republican right, I was seriously considering voting for him in 2008.

The thing that always sticks in my mind regarding McCain was when he corrected some woman on the campaign trail who said Obama was a Muslim and said something along the lines of 'it's his policies not the man that I'm against'.

Class. You definitely would never hear anything like that from Trump -- the racist Birther cnut would actively encourage it.

Are you on meth? I said I disagreed with him on everything except his vote on the repeal of Obamacare.

We disagree with his politics all we want but he was a fine man that knew when to stand his ground and he also knew when to draw the line on bullshit. He was in an election and he still praised the guy he was running against. He was dignified and had humility something that is totally lacking in American politics right now.

    Interesting reading this thread.

Many forget that McCain was shot down over Vietnam and was a prisoner of war for years in the Hanoi Hilton.

McCain's capture and subsequent imprisonment occurred on October 26, 1967. He was flying his 23rd bombing mission over North Vietnam when his A-4E Skyhawk was shot down by a missile over Hanoi.[36][37] McCain fractured both arms and a leg when he ejected from the aircraft,[38] and nearly drowned after he parachuted into Trúc Bạch Lake. Some North Vietnamese pulled him ashore, then others crushed his shoulder with a rifle butt and bayoneted him.[36] McCain was then transported to Hanoi's main Hỏa Lò Prison, nicknamed the "Hanoi Hilton".[37]

Although McCain was seriously wounded and injured, his captors refused to treat him. They beat and interrogated him to get information, and he was given medical care only when the North Vietnamese discovered that his father was an admiral.[39] His status as a prisoner of war (POW) made the front pages of major newspapers.[40][41]

McCain spent six weeks in the hospital, where he received marginal care. He had lost 50 pounds (23 kg), was in a chest cast, and his gray hair had turned as white as snow.[36] McCain was sent to a different camp on the outskirts of Hanoi.[42] In December 1967, McCain was placed in a cell with two other Americans who did not expect him to live more than a week.[43]

In March 1968, McCain was placed into solitary confinement, where he would remain for two years.[44]

In mid-1968, his father John S. McCain Jr. was named commander of all U.S. forces in the Vietnam theater, and the North Vietnamese offered McCain early release[45] because they wanted to appear merciful for propaganda purposes,[46] and also to show other POWs that elite prisoners were willing to be treated preferentially.[45] McCain refused repatriation unless every man taken in before him was also released. Such early release was prohibited by the POWs' interpretation of the military Code of Conduct which states in Article III: "I will accept neither parole nor special favors from the enemy".[47] To prevent the enemy from using prisoners for propaganda, officers were to agree to be released in the order in which they were captured.[36]

Beginning in August 1968, McCain was subjected to a program of severe torture.[48] He was bound and beaten every two hours; this punishment occurred at the same time that he was suffering from dysentery.[36][48] Further injuries brought McCain to "the point of suicide," but his preparations were interrupted by guards. Eventually, McCain made an anti-U.S.
propaganda "confession".[36] He had always felt that his statement was dishonorable, but as he later wrote, "I had learned what we all learned over there: every man has his breaking point. I had reached mine."[49][50] Many U.S. POWs were tortured and maltreated in order to extract "confessions" and propaganda statements;[51] virtually all of them eventually yielded something to their captors.[52] McCain received two to three beatings weekly because of his continued refusal to sign additional statements.[53]

McCain refused to meet various anti-war groups seeking peace in Hanoi, wanting to give neither them nor the North Vietnamese a propaganda victory.[54] From late 1969, treatment of McCain and many of the other POWs became more tolerable,[55] while McCain continued actively to resist the camp authorities.[56] McCain and other prisoners cheered the U.S. "Christmas Bombing" campaign of December 1972, viewing it as a forceful measure to push North Vietnam to terms.[50][57]

McCain was a prisoner of war in North Vietnam for five and a half years until his release on March 14, 1973.[58] His wartime injuries left him permanently incapable of raising his arms above his head.[59] After his release from the Hanoi Hilton, McCain returned to the site with his wife Cindy and family on a few occasions to come to grips with what happened to him there during his capture.[60]

    McCain and the POW Cover-Up

The “war hero” candidate buried information about POWs left behind in Vietnam.

Skim-read it. McCain was doing what was in the interest of the government. Most politicians do.
It's political suicide to do something that can be construed as "anti-American" and saying/doing something against the government is normally seen as "anti-American". Therein lies the sad paradox of government, no matter what colour.
I think McCain stood up for principles, but notions of what the government of the day did may have been wrong and may have, for him, been principles of a lower purpose than principes of overall governance.
    Such is collateral damage.
