I think it's just a case of believing they are the righteous, champions of democracy and freedom. I think this comes from the right place inside them.. So when all the evidence points to the fact they've been used by powerful forces of their own (read rich US oligarchs and a networks of wealth and privilege) for decades or longer, they simply can't believe it - and so don't. And the psychologists behind it all know this. That's why they do things as brazen as 9/11 or "weapons of mass destruction" lies, or the destruction of the lower middle and working classes with "free trade deals" all the while distracting them with Internet Porn, Ultimate Fight Club and Who Wants to Be a Star they do so cause, in the end, they know they'll get away with it. Sad reflection on reality
