^^ What I did not understand (I have been there that weekend too), why have they dimmed the lights and had no music? Not that it bothered me much though.

So we have a four day weekend this week, 2 buddhist holidays on Thursday and Friday. I assume all bars (Soi 6, Walking Street, etc.) will be closed on those days, but anyone know for sure? Was going to come down Thursday but if the bars are closed I'll probably just wait. I asked this question on Thaivisa and got flamed; should have known better I guess.

From Thailand National Public Holidays 2008

July 17th -- Asalha Puja Day ---- Commemorates the Buddha's first sermon to his first five disciples.

    July 18th --
Khao Phansaa (Buddhist Lent) ---- The start of a 3 month period of the rainy season when monks stay inside the wats, and the preferred day for young men to enter the monkhood or their traditional short period as a monk

    From the Pattaya Mail:

This year, the Buddhist holy days of Asalaha Bucha and Khao Pansaa fall on July 17 and 18. Both are recognized public holidays, and therefore banks and most businesses will be closed. It is also against the rules to sell alcoholic beverages during the beginning of Buddhist Lent. Many activities are planned throughout the city, especially at our temples, and everyone is invited to take part.
