What? No snappy comeback BH?
What? No snappy comeback BH?
Of course I am interested in the topic, but your article is trash. Do you expect everyone to automatically agree with what you post up? I have presented the physiological explanation of calories and their importance to losing weight and your article says that is not necessary. Calorie counting is extemely important and that is a fact, so I dispute your article.
Get a grip BH. Health is my profession, so I post quite a bit in this forum, if you care to check.
Some precious people obsess over it to an OCD extent by weighing all their food (or getting some poor other sod to do it). The only reason for doing that is because they don't get enough exercise. Keep active all the time, choose food types wisely, have a fast day once or twice per week, and you can pretty much eat as much as you want.
Your are dense, aren't you?
Despite all the diet strategies out there, weight management still comes down to the calories you take in versus those you burn off.

The Dos and Don'ts of Counting Calories
It is known that in order to gain weight, more calories need to be entering your body than leaving it.
How Many Calories Should You Eat Per Day to Lose Weight?
To put it very simply, you need to create a “calorie deficit” to lose weight. What that means is, you want to eat less calories than your body burns in a day.

I could go on and on, but you get the idea, or not.
Without any doubt this is true. However unfortunately it is only half the truth. The other half is that the human body is well adapted to times with low food availability and is VERY efficient in reducing calory needs when less calories are coming in. In effect you may cut calories by a lot and after the first few days there is no further loss of weight. Exercise does help but only so much.Originally Posted by rickschoppers

The article doesn't deny the 'calorie deficit to lose weight' notion. It just gives reasons why some people who follow closely their calories consumed don't always lose weight. For some, it's because they rely on figures that are not accurate and for some it's because their bodies process their food in a way that is different to others and therefore the number of calories from their food is more (or less) than others.
No doubt the body will go into starvation mode which is what you want, to an extent. If the body is not receiving enough calories to maintain normal body functions, it will start breaking down fat which translates to weight loss. If that caloric deficiency continues, the body will begin breaking down muscle, which you don't want. If this deficiency continues further, the body's organ systems will begin to shut down and eventually, death.
Exercise also revs the metabolism which will speed up the weight loss process.
"Nash can quantify the calories in each cracker crunched and stair climbed. But when it comes to weight gain, he finds that not all calories are equal." FALSE STATEMENT
All calories are equal since it is a finite measure of energy.
"How much weight he gains or loses seems to depend less on the total number of calories, and more on where the calories come from and how he consumes them." FALSE STATEMENT
A calorie is a calorie is a calorie, no matter what the source.
"To lose weight, you must use up more calories than you take in," TRUE STATEMENT
"Roughly speaking, one calorie is the heat required to raise the temperature of one kilogram of water by one degree Celsius." TRUE STATEMENT
"There’s also the problem that no two people are identical." TRUE STATEMENT
This is probably the single most important factor to understand while trying to lose weight by counting calories.
"The researchers suggested that irregular feedings affect the circadian cycle of the liver and the way it metabolises food, thus influencing overall energy balance." FALSE STATEMENT
It has been found that eating 5-6 smaller meals daily is healthier than eating 2-3 large meals. The liver could care less what times these meals are eaten and reacts only to the presence of food.
"The diversity of microbes that each of us hosts is as individual as a fingerprint and yet easily transformed by diet and our environment." TRUE STATEMENT
Diet varies around the world and is the reason why Thais can eat their food, but westerners have difficulty with some of their dishes and visa versa.
OK, I read the article and found it to state some already well known facts about nutrition that I have quoted above with my comments. The individual varations the author claimed seemed to be excessive and I would expect to find the numbers were inaccurate. There is no need to change how we count calories or eliminate the process to lose weight until there is a well accepted and proven process to replace it, which the author fails to do. In fact, she claims the calorie counting process is a good process, so why change it or lobby for its abolishment? The article is as I suspected, trash and speculation. I prefer to go with what is proven before I start betting people's health or even lives on it.

That would be the best case. However the body tries everything else before it digs deeper into reserves (fat). You get tired and less energetic. The theory is you fight that tendency with exercise, but in the real world it does not easily work that way.
You know, in theory theory and reality are the same in reality they are not.
