A friend who returned from his vacation in Thailand last week tells me that the Basilico restaurant in Soi 33 in Bangkok has the best Italian food. Is he exaggerating?

it's the worst Italian restaurant ever, unless you are Indian
ceased to go there a long time ago, maybe new management ? new cook ?
The pizzas are alright.
Lots of good Italian restaurants in BKK and I've tried a lot of them as Italian is one of my favorites. I've not tried all so can not say unequivacally which is the best and have not tried the one in quesstion.
they opened a pizza outlet in Soi 20 I think, will need to give it a try againOriginally Posted by filch
Recently tried one on Sukhumvit down around soi 5 and thought it was pretty authentic and quite good. Sorry the name escapes me now.
33 is closer for me. Deliveries that is.Originally Posted by Butterfly
Wonder if their 'franchise outlet' is as good...keep us posted.
Are there? I've never found a good one in Bangkok.Originally Posted by SEA Traveler
L'Opera, Soi 39 - guess it is still there. Without doubt used to be the very best Eye-tie in Bangkok, possibly in Thailand.
While I think your friend is well informed that Basilico is of a very high standard, I think that as mentioned, L'Opera is very good too. Another excellent Italian restaurant is Spasso in Ratchadamri and Big Pizza is great for delivery. I haven't tried Enotech on Sukhumvit but have heard good things, and last time I went to Giusto I was a little dissapointed - normally they're very good too.
They do deep pan now?Originally Posted by filch
Butterfly's mate on Ajarn (Tomcat) did a good review of Guisto. He said it's Italian food for Thais.Originally Posted by bkkrunner
I always liked the Italian place on Suk Soi 19 (name escapes me now). I went on a date with njdesi there once...
I've never rated Basilico, poor service poor food
I don't know to be honest. I just usually get their wood oven cooked ones, thin base.Originally Posted by Marmite the Dog
Basilico is cheap and cheerful Italian food.
Excellent Calzone, certainly the best I have had in BKK, but for other food I wouldn't put it in the top class bracket.
Better rated for me would be La Villa (TL Soi 9) and Enotica (Soi 29).
I did ask an Italian friend once what he thought was the best and it was one in (or around) Lang Suan for him, but I forget the name.
Rossini probably the best italian
^ quite miserable IMO,
Opera is always good,
and I went to that other one the other day, the one located in Sukhumvit Soi 49/1, and it was great, and great service for a change. Wide selection of real Italian wine. Expect to spend 5000 THB for 2 including wine.
he is my mate ? I wouldn't know,Originally Posted by Marmite the Dog
Gusto has become terrible, but again maybe new cook, new management. Used to be real, but yes as pointed out, it's Italian food for Thais, usually rich Thais with no taste, so they just take bites or put a lot tomato sauce on everything to hide the taste. A bit like the Americans![]()
My sous chef used to work for basilico. He says the foods good for what it is, clean to eat but a bit pedestrian. More inline with a spaghetti factory than fine dining.
How is your place going on Silom Timber?
That place is great, but I've left there for a kitchen position on Thonglor now. Got bored in the office and needed some more action so back to cooking.
Others also have seem to have found some good Italian restaurants in BKK and they are varied. Possibly your selection of Italian restaurants that you are choosing to patronize just needs to improve. Or else your expectations and standards are of such that they just are not being met.![]()
