I would not pay to eat there again. Even it free, I would not eat there. Sunrise Tacos serves horrible food. I have no desire to eat there.

I am sure Taco Bell would kick Sunrise Tacos' ass. I would pay to eat at Taco Bell, but only for a quick Mexican food fix (that does not mean Taco Bell is good; it only means Taco Bell is better than Sunrise Tacos).

Again, as far as I can tell, we only have a few good Mexican food places: Sunrise Tacos, Los Cabos, La Monita, and Miguel's in Chiang Mai.

That is good given that only a few years ago we did not have any decent Mexican food in Thailand.

But I am still waiting on the real deal.

Any updates on good Mexican food in Thailand.

Sunrise Tacos is just awful and overpriced (makes me wish Taco Bell would come here).

I don't understand why people eat at Sunrise Tacos. Maybe most of them are tourists who don't know any better.

Tacos and Salsa is very good, IMHO (still not like the really good stuff back home).

    5555....That was a worthwhile post.

Yes, the update is I went to Sunrise Tacos recently and it was excellent, best visit ever. (Lucky for them really, cos the owners/friends silly behaviour in this thread nearly cost them repeat visits, but my kids like it).

I enjoyed it, the kids enjoyed it and it was excellent value for money, especially the 69 Baht heinekens. How many restaurants serve it that cheaply? Not Tacos and Salsa that's for sure.

The hot salsa was magnificently hot and my Enchilladas Suiza was very good. My youngest tasted it and said he wisehed he'd ordered those and could we come again soon so he could try them.

I like both restaurants, Sunrise Tacos and Tacos and Salsa (I have no childish agenda), and 6 months ago would have been very pro the latter if asked.

However I would say that has changed, Sunrise Tacos wins in the following areas....

    a) Tables you can actually sit at and spread out upon, a family of 4 on a T&S table is decidedly cramped.
    b) Service is far better at ST, we had the older lady again and she was very pleasant and efficient. T&S can be quite diamal at times.
    c) The chicken in the enchilladas is far far better at ST. It is nicely cooked and seasoned, at ST it is just chicken. Perfectly nice chicken but would be more at home in a Caesar salad, no seasoning at all.

The time I went to Sunrise Tacos in Emporium it was garbage, Soi 12, other than the first visit (which was not a complaint about the food) has been most enjoyable.

Authenticity to real 'Mexican' food, I don't give a fuck about, I know the tastes I want and I get those.

Right....cue the silly man with the silly agenda.

Nail on the head. "Real Mexican" food is non existent. Even in Mexico, the dishes with the same name vary greatly depending on the locale.

^^^^ and ^ You mean "Sarbosa"? I think that's the name. They have one in Villa in Ari also (or they did when I used to live in the area a couple of years ago).

Average at best, nowhere near as good as Sunrise Tacos. No variety, just 3 or 4 menu items I think, small portions and far too mild on the spices. Similar in standard to the ill-fated Taco Loco in Silom.

To Bobcock: I have to conclude your knowledge of Mexican food is extremely limited. I respect you opinion BUT......Sunrise Tacos is vomit. The food is horrible and overpriced.

The food served at Sunrise Tacos is about as bland as it gets.......I really can't even call it Mexican food. At least Taco Bell has some spices......Sunrise Tacos taste wrong, smells wrong, and looks wrong.

Heiniken beer........who cares? I go to a Mexican restaurant for the food, not the foreign beer that is not even Mexican beer.

Sunrise Tacos is not even in the same league as Tacos and Salsa, La Monita and Los Cabos.......not even close!

Service: Never once have I had a problem with the service at Tacos and Salsa. And I have no problem with the chairs (not sure what that is about).

Kids like it? Kids can be taught to like shit on a piece of toast (irrelevant). I am sure the "kids" would like Mexican food at other places too.

Focusing on food, which I think is the most important thing (at least for me), Sunrise Tacos is shit, Tacos and Salsa is really good Mexican food.

We should construct a poll and vote. Anybody know how?

I think it is quite likely that traditional Mexican food is similar to traditional Indian food, ie with bones, gristle, skin and other shite that non Mexican or Indians don't eat.

As some of you know, I constructed a poll so that we could vote (honestly) about our choice for the best Mexican food place in Thailand.

Unfortunately, some posters decided to distort that poll by stacking the cards in favor of Sunrise Tacos.

That happened almost immediately, so it is clear something is amiss. No doubt one person decided to call his friends and say post, post, post......or something like that.

Some of those posters had not even been posting anything about Mexican food.

One, Chairman Mao, repeatedly wrote how he hated Sunrise Tacos then voted it #1. Why? I know why. Unfortunately, a few people here decided to ruin the poll/ Why? I have no idea: they don't understand what Mexican food is; they dislike me; they have some personal interest in Sunrise Tacos; other.

Here are some of Chairman Mao's earlier posts about Sunrise Tacos:

#99: “JHC!! What the fuk is this place. I had to go there about 2 years ago, and it was barely passable as edible. Was forced to back there tonight, fuk me I think I've just eaten about 2 kilos of soaked newspapers. Which were boiled in old socks. I've never, ever, ever seen or eaten such shite in all my life.

I had the enchiladas, which came with a tablespoon of orange rice, with a few peas in it (think those 7-11 microwave dinner things) and this gray kidney bean slop. I kid you not with the gray, the colour was actually fuking gray, and it was slop. about 3 kidney beans mashed in a cup of water, some newspaper thrown in, then left to marinate in week old underpants. Then the enchinladas, fuking hell, i'd rather have eaten my sock.

A serious warning. Avoid at all costs.”

#110: “I quite like mexican cuisine every now and again. There are some okay place in Bangkok. This joke of a place isn't one of them.”

And the goes on to rave about Miguel’s (one wonders why CM did not select Miguels):

“Miguels it called. Open by the guy who set up Mike's Burgers.

The best mexican I've had in Thailand. Nice lay out too.

And not a hint of a taste of boiled sock or underpants like this Sunrise place.”

#127: “Had a lovely case of the trots today pre-lunch time. All I ate since last night's 'enchiladas' were my morning ground coffee and home baked croissants as always.

Had to call the contact I met there in the afternoon and they said they had the same trotting experience today.

And to get get back to the enchiladas, as Nawty mentioned, were like soggy cardboard, mine were also luke warm, like the sauce and cheese on top were put in a microwave for not quite long enough.

By far the worst dining experience that I can recollect.

    And I've lived in Isaan.

#143: “Actually think the person I had to meet there took a photo of the gray slop kidney beans.

Will ask if they have a pic of that place that gave us both the trots.

And I wouldn't go back there if it were free.”

#130: “Should add that another aspect I found disappointing, and quite surprising, was a lack of combo meals. You know, a few tacos, enchiladas, burritos etc etc and a few drinks for a set price, so 2 or 3 or 4 diners can all help themselves to whatever they want.

But instead all they had were the individual set meals - tacos with crap rice and peas, and kidney bean water slop.

    Shithole.”

    In sum:

The hint that should be taken is many posters are unable to grasp reality (for what reason or reasons, I do not know).

You (and you know who you are) were just exposed for engaging in a corrupt activity: deliberately distorting the results of a poll to fit your bias.

Perhaps many of you have been living in Thailand too long--adopting corruption as your religion.

The good news is that there are some good Mexican food places in Thailand now (e.g., Miguel's, Tacos and Salsa, La Monita, Los Cabos).

The bad news for you is that Sunrise Tacos is not one of them....not even close.

No amount of corruption or poll manipulation or childish character assassination attempts will change that situation.

As luck would have it the owner personally contacted me to send on a free voucher. He's just such a great guy.

Went back and was pleasantly surprised, not only at the gastronomical orchestra that I was treated to by the bevvy of mexican chefs in the kitchen, but they have 20 yr old khmer girls massaging you as you eat. one on each foot, and one on yer knob.

    Tiz number one for me!

555555....I must say Mao the food in your pic bares little resemblance to what I have been served except the plate.

Maybe the arrival of the new Mexican chefs (who have obviously never been there according to Diatrbe) and maybe your criticisms that obviously brought the owner to TD have been the making of the place.

I don't know as I never went there before my first review in this thread.

Out of interest Diatribe, how mant times have you eaten there and when was the last time?

I just had the marinated pork tacos lunch special at Sunrise yesterday. It wasn't really that good, slightly chewy pork that didn't really blend well with the rest of the ingredients.

My friend got something else, 3 'soft' tacos (open faced) with meat and what looked like scrambled eggs on them. He wasn't too happy with them.

Having said that, The supreme nachos were alright, though, not southern California style the way I like it. And the fish tacos (my usual) are pretty good.

A while back, Greg changed the shells and chips (I think they are home made now). I don't like it as much as the older style. But all in all, it's not too bad.

If you're willing to pay more for quality, Los Cabos is that much better for what you pay for. Better nachos. Good tamales. Good tacos. Good portions. And they have good ribs. Rob does a pretty good job and always asks how your meal is if he's there and walks through. It's a small thing, but I like that kind of attention, service.
Everybody needs money, that's why they call it money.
