We are sorry to report that the great Lemmy has died at the age of 70. Perhaps the living embodiment of rock n roll and one of the greatest bass players ever, Lemmy was deeply loved in our parish for his iconic presence, his bass growl, his killer songs, his image and his deeply intelligent and yet no bullshit personnae.
His whole life reads like a history of rock n roll from roading with Jimi Hendrix, to playing in the Rocking Vicars in my hometown of Blackpool in the sixties, being the main engine in Space Ritual Hawkwind and singing ‘Silver Machine’ and of course for Motorhead – one of the greatest rock n roll bands of all time.
I’ve interviewed him several times and he was funny, unapologetic and full of on the road work wisdom and was one of the last few people in rock n roll who was 100 per cent himself. Fashions came and went and there was Lemmy being himself in the middle of the whirlwind. He was gruff and bluff but had a heart of gold and made a fantastic racket that touched anyone who had a rock n roll heart.
Rock n roll and the world will be a far, far emptier place without Lemmy.
See you on the other side…
