    AVG

just trying to install it on this laptop, taken off a really old version of Norton which hadn't been updated for 4 years (ffs) but it wont let me, AVG itself asked if i was using a proxy - i'm not. When i tried it again via Ninite i get the following message:

download failed the server name or address could not be resolved - 221

    any ideas?

    running XP

Four years is a long time without a complete format. Also, since you are changing anti virus programs it would be a good time to back up what you want to save on an external HD and do a format and new clean install of your OS.

Have you really got rid of Norton? It hides itself even after an un-install. I used all the 'fixes' available to remove it but it would keep on reappearing. In the end, I had to format and reinstall everything.

Here's a link to Norton's own removal tool. Didn't work for me though.

Yeah i uninstalled it. I did wonder if it was still there - have heard similar things, as i'm typing Avast hast just finished installing. Not used it before seems the same as AVG though so fingers crossed it's ok.

I reckon you have a previous AVG installed on there Al

    I had the same problem

What you have to do is completely delete all the traces the previous one has left behind

    Add/Remove programs won't delete everything

You have to delete all the application data and registry shite

This spotty cnut will show you

Or install Avast Free Antivirus from here

    http://download.cnet.com/Avast-Free-...b_content;main

ha ha i'll have a look at the spotty kids advice later - got avast scanning now as couldn't get either AVG or Essentials to install.

3% of scan complete - 7 infected files found. Thais don't believe in maintenance do they?

Really, my pirated copy has gone un-detected. There is ways around WGA if you could be bothered to google them, currently Iam using HAL 7600.

    Just found this

"Avast vs. Microsoft Security Essentials memory usage: While using the computer for other tasks, there’s not much difference on the memory usage by both programs. Avast will use 2.7MB while MSE runs 3.1MB of memory. However, Avast will use more memory during a scan:

Avast will use 7.7MB of memory while running a scan
MSE is only using 4MB of memory during a scan process"
