ASUS P7P55D Weird Scenes Inside The Goldmine!

My M/B has been working fine for the last few months with 8GB (4 x 2 GB of 1600MHz. Kingston Hyper X RAM) DDR3.

Then Saturday, it went bottoms up, it started to only recognize 4GB, then this dropped to 2GB.

I pulled the RAM, and started checking it out.

Normally, you should be able to boot from slot A1 or B1, however, not one of the 4 sticks will boot from A1. Multiple beeps and will not POST)

So, I stuck each stick into DIMM B1, every stick is detected and boots up fine as a single stick in the B1 slot. So far so good. (2GB at single channel speed)

If I add a stick to DIMM A1, nothing is detected, but it still boots showing only the 2GB stick in B1.

Like I say, there seems to be nothing wrong with the RAM as they all boot individually in B1.

I have already called ASUS to try and RMA the board.....but they are so sloooooooow!

So today, I stuck various combinations of the 4 sticks into various slots.

If I stick 2 sticks into B1 and B2, I get a clean boot, and 4GB recognized, however it is running in single channel mode, (Which ASUS say does not work!!!!)

If I try an additional 2GB in slot A2, (B1,B2,A2) I still get a clean boot, but still only 4GB recognized in single channel mode.

    If I try 2GB in A1, (i.e. A1, B1, B2) I still get only 4GB single channel.

If I stick all four sticks in - I go back to a clean boot, but only 2GB recognised - tell me ....this really is pointing to something wrong with slot A1!

It has been driving me round the twist!

If it is the board, I will RMA it, but looking at the way ASUS handle RMA's, I think I will plumb for a Gigabyte GA-P55-UD6 and sell the damn ASUS when, if they ever return it.

    Any ideas?

    Best answer SUCCESS !!!
I put one memory module in slot A1 and applied power, then cleared CMOS, then it booted with successful POST.
Added second module in slot B1 and successful boot again.
Added third and fourth modules (4 x 2GB) and successfully booted, good POST, entered Setup.
Now the problem is that only 4 GB is recognized, but 8 GB is installed. This can probably be fixed by flashing the BIOS after the OS is installed.
Memory modules are OK, motherboard is OK, frustration has gone away.

Hopefully it won't be "Where the sun don't shine!"

Weird thin is, I have managed to O/C the bugger, with 2GB in B1 and 2GB in B2, the processor is running at 3.8GHz (i5-750)

The 2 x 2GB RAM is running in single Channel mode in slots B1 and B2 at 1700 MHz which it never could in Dual Channel mode, the results I am seeing from Lava, put its speed right at the top again in RAM timings, the bloody thing is flying and it is running 15C cooler than it did with 8GB Dual Channel....am I missing something?

    Thanks,
but I tried reflashing (ASUS sent me the latest update, but it was the one I was already using) No luck, nothing at all will work in A1!

It makes no difference how and when I flash the BIOS.

And populating all four slots drops me back to 2GB in single channel - I am not really sure what to do here, as 4GB in single channel seems to working faster and cooler than 8GB in dual channel....maybe I am just trying to justify buying the Gigabyte UD6?

But I hate it when things don't work as they should...it is like something gnawing at the back of my head.....you keep waiting for it to fail completely and totally let you down. Like loosing confidence in something - Like when your telly breaks and you get it repaired by the local Somchai...you never enjoy watching a program again, you sit there constantly monitoring it, waiting for it to go up in a puff of smoke - You end up chucking it out and buying a new one just for "The Peace Of Mind"

It hasn't yet, it has been running that Lava bench mark for about 4 hours, the temperatures are at least 15C down from usual, probably because the RAM slots are the furthest away from the PSU - but those buggers nearly burn the skin off your fingers.

It is almost a DILEMA - buy food for your children, or let them starve and buy a new motherboard....I fear the child will go hungry!

    Cheers,
I was hoping that it was the slot, and not the damn RAM, at least I can go and chase ASUS for a repair or replacment, I still fancy the UD6 though, there are two sites here in Thailand selling it for about 4.5K Baht, and it has IEE1394, which my old PCI cards will not work with the ASUS - and a PCIE version to buy separately is more than difference in price between a new ASUS and a new Gigabyte.

Have you ever used Gigabyte Motherboards?

I have had Intel, Micro something... I think Microstar and ASUS only, INTEL were reliable but pretty restrained and not very friendly to try and speed up, ASUS was great until this disaster, Microstar were terrible, how would you rate Gigabyte compared to ASUS?

When I speed them up, I only use stock voltages, not a milivolt more, so if it fails the OC, fair enough, drop it a notch.

I cannot wank to porn here, it is difficult, but I hate to waste time so I just need a really fast system that takes me to www.Mict.gov.th before I waste my time getting a hard on -

    Close window
    close window

    Go to bed.

No, I used 8GB running Adobe Premiere Pro, processing video, it does make a difference I think, but I will give it a run tomorrow using the 4GB single channel o/c mode and see if it makes any difference.

It just worries me that part of the board has failed, I don't want to lose a load of video that I am working with if another slot or the board is on the way out.

It has been on 24 hours a day for almost 18 months - I hate switching them off and on, they always seem to run better if just left in one state - ON!

No mate, it should still be in warranty, but the thought of having to wait 1 month for ASUS to fulfill an RMA fills me with dread!

I have a shed load of old Motherboards piling around me, back to P3 1GHz. shit, I need it like NOW!, I cannot wait a month, it would drive me mental, if I am not already there.

If I could just get confirmation from ASUS that they will try and repair the thing, then it is good enough for me to fuck it off and try Gigabyte. (i.e. I don't want it repaired, I want it replaced)

I bought a Gigabyte GTX460 1GB O/C Graphics card and it is awesome, ASUS have sort of let me down lately, I have one of their IEE1394 cards for my DV camera, it doesn't work with Windows 7, and their response is basically - FUCK YOU! We won't support it. So, I thought maybe time to venture to greener pastures, but does anyone know if the grass is that much greener at Gigabyte?

ASUS give a 3 year warranty...allegedly! (This is however dependant on serial number - so If Com Plaza has had it on its shelf for 2 years then I guess I am off to buy the UD6! (Has anyone hear dealt with a company called "Thanni"?

They have the board I want but only accept like a pre paid transfer of cash...which in my experience here is an opportunity to get yourself FUCKED!

No but a few people have posted on this forum about another Thailand company who apparently are quite legit and reliable. Can't remember the name, but perhaps one of their customers will dive in and tell you.

Normally, if I order online I use a company called INVADEIT, (invadeIT - Computer Online Thailand, Computer Parts, PC Components, Laptop Computers, Digital Cameras and more!) who are something to do with Thaivisa, they are really very good, first rate in my experience, they too have the UD6 board, but for some reason they are "Offline" and not accepting orders until the 27th of September....seems a bit strange to me...like they are packing their bags and doing a runner, I hope not, but it doesn't exactly fill you with confidence!

A couple of days shutdown you can understand, but nigh on a month?????

Brian, do you have True internet? Updated to the latest mega 100mb connection yet? Don't bother... Missus went for it a few days ago and we're now getting less than the old 6mb landline package... Engineer due today, didn't come... Missus givin 'em til 11am tomorrow then she go to the shop and start screaming (and she can scream...) - this is exactly the kind of task that Thai women are useful for, whilst I'm at work, ignoring all the stress...

No mate, only the 6GB TOT broadband, 599 month, it suffices!

I for some reason (past dealing with TOT, would not hold my breath getting 100MB - they FAILED to supply 3MB, we had their ENGINEERS - for a want of a better word, out a number of times - useless!

I only upgraded to the 6 MB package (at the same price) to try and get about 3MB download.

I shouldn't complain too much, I have managed to download quite a few movies over the past couple of years, better results than I had with AIS on the Mobile/GPRS/EDGE connection for the same price.

Their is a guy up in the next village using some sort of internet from TOT, he cannot get normal broadband/ADSL, so TOT came and stuck a 100 foot pole up on his roof and it is some sort of wireless shit - It never works apparently...

I also had another aquaintance who subscribed to the TOT satellite internet, that too didn't work - they just don't seem to have the basic equipment to peak a dish or meter a signal, they usually rely on "Left a bit Somchai, right a bit Somchai, up, Down....Bernie the Bolt. That's it love, give us a call when it goes off!

Sad really when they invest in the technology, but never follow it up with the proper support or give the guys the proper tools to do the job in the first place!

You want to see my 6MB installation, 180 metres of ADSL cable hung from Lam Yai trees, a coil of 50 metres of cable on my balcony.

I put up 5 posts 40 M apart sunk in concrete "After The Fact, to stop anyone cutting grass not to cut the cable.

The last 20 Metres or so crosses a klong, I really had my work cut out there trying to get it above the heads of the maritime locals!

You could here them at night...."Go to Port Prikporn, port laddie, there is an obstruction in the water....On the poop deck Mr. Somphan, have that man flogged with a Cat 'o 'Nine, he nearly scuppered us in an ADSL cable"

"Aye Aye Sir, that be that blood Falang on the starboard bow, with his high falluted technology, - prepare too fire Mr. Christian!

    Cannons ready Sir!

Mr. Christian, can you check the "Twain" is it 5MB or 3MB, I doubt for a second sir it is anything near 100MB, fire a shot broadside, wake the lubber in his bed!

Seriously, anyone here using the Gigabyte GA-P55_UD6 in any format, GA55A, GA, or UD^-C, any comments as I feel an urge to BUY IT!

Is it a lot better than the P7P55D-LE from ASUS or not worth the expense? Some sites say it is overpriced, but that was back when it was almost 10K, now it is about 6.4K!

I have no desire to change to LGA 1366, or LGA 1155, my budget on processors is SPENT, so I want the best I can get on the i5 -Lynnfield, 1156 setup.

Thank Eee very much me hearties!
