    Wireless Booster

our condo is about to upgrade its wireless internet from 1mb to 6mb.

1mb was useless and so i installed tot adsl which is fine.

but with a free 6mb service i shall cancel tot.

the wireless sender unit is on the ceiling in the corridoor outside our unit, but my "workstation" is at the other end of the apartment from the door and the signal is weak, at best only one line on the taskbar meter, and sometimes it cuts out, when i move my laptop nearer the door and hence the sender unit the signal is fine.

are there any signal booster gadgets on the market, i dont really want to have to move my comfortable little computer corner to another location in the apartment.

Well that's odd, your Google must work differently to my Google.

This was very near the top.

Certainly those who've bought it and review it rave about it. Almost tempted to buy one myself. My signal drops off about a third over only 15-20 yards.

Be aware - it is intended to be used with a cable connection to the main router.

Or cable connected to a wireless access point:
    "Wireless access point not included"

It is furthermore old technology from 2005 which Hawking is trying to flog..

I just bought an Asus RT-N13U router which can be used as a wireless repeater to extend your wireless range.

It also has a built in print server and FTP server which might be useful to you.

    exactly.

which is why it is not suitable for my purposes, as i explained in my initial post, the main router is outside my apartment in the corridor, is used by others, and is not mine to fiddle around with.

dont know why mr. barracuda recommended it, maybe he didnt (or couldnt)
    read the initial post.

Well if you can't run a wire to the ceiling outside, why not move your router to that side of the room and run an inexpensive ethernet cable to your PC?

(Or failing that, tin foil, a cornflake packet and some sticky backed plastic might be the way to go).

Another alternative is talk to your condo management and tell them Wifi signal not strong enough. You might convince them to install a more powerful wifi unit.

I have played with various methods of extending range and you might or might be surprised to find that these homemade methods often produce (and many times at a lower price) out-preform the gadgets that people pay for. Many times you only need an increase of a couple db.

6 meg between how many people ?

I would not be ditching your ADSL just yet

personally I would keep the ADSL as then at least you have some control over your internet and are not dependent on anyone but your ISP

True enough, you only need one or two people swamping the connection with torrents and you'll be spitting feathers.
